Best Headphone for low level listening ?

My hearing is not what it used to be, (25 years of working in the trades has not been kind) certain frequencies at certain levels cause my left ear to get a kind of crackle / static noise, If i lower the volume, or get away from the offensive tone / level my hearing goes back to what is now considered normal.

I love the Sennhieser HD-650 But from my brief association with them it's obvious to me that they need a bit of power / volume to give there best performance. I would like to keep my hearing from getting worse, I love a balanced sound with bass impact (not boomy bass) and the highs cannot be harsh (this is the region  where my hearing starts to fail / breakup)

I tend to notice a little imbalance if i take the volume to low, not continuous but more intermittent especially just after getting everything warmed up (Gear consists of Schiit modi, & Valhalla, sony Vaio laptop with 450GB of lossless files)

My question :  Is there a pair of headphones that excel at low level listening with good mid bass impact, and a balanced sound top to bottom, with good detail retrieval  (I'm not big on IEM's never can seem to get them to fit) I would prefer an over ear closed or open back

Thanks:beerchug:

I'm not a very low volume listener, but I've found Grado headphones, particularly the RS1i to be quite enjoyable at low volume.

On a side note, I really don't like any of the orthodynamic headphones I've tried at low volumes. They really require some volume to become enjoyable for me personally.

I think the Q701 is great at low to moderate levels. It may not have the bass impact or slam you are looking for though. The bass mod helps quite a bit though. I don't find them to be bright or harsh, but some people do.

Seems like you would benifit from a Mellow warm kind of headphone with no harshness. Try looking into the Sony MDR MA900 they preform great at low levels and are extremely efficient.
