IMHO:

If you're looking for a DAP that sound more organic than the DX90, then I would recommend the X5. It sounds more analog/old school/vinyl, and is also quite neutral. With the new firmware and plenty of burn-in I'm happy to report that I find the X5 quite neutral as well and a very nice combo with the FSP (I'm sitting at Starbucks and listening to this combo right now as I type this). It's probably the best $700 value combo in the audiophile world today.

From my perspective I think the Sabre based DX90 may not be organic but it sounds very natural/clear/transparent/silky. A very hard thing to do and that's why I think people love sabre so much.

It's also cool that you like this portable setup more than desktop rigs you used to own. I think I would enjoy both types of sounds (warm/organic and neutral/analytical - I would say my current headphones are a cross between them)...just trying to figure out which I should focus on first. Since I don't have the luxury of hearing it all myself at the moment, all I can go from is other people's impressions, and there are so many conflicting ones. I still wonder if the Calyx M would be worth the added cost, but not many have compared it with all the other DAPs.

I'm continually impressed with my spirit pros. Comfort has improved remarkably since I got them and im able to wear them for a couple of hours now with little discomfort. I especially like how they sound great out of every source I've used like the Marantz CR603 receiver, ibasso dx50, beyerdynamic a200p, galaxy s5, ipad mini and ipod nano.
Now all I need to find is a compatible 3.5mm cable with inline remote and 45 or 90 degree plug. The included cable fits into my portable devices protective cases just fine but the straight plug is horrible for portable use. Anyone have any cable recommendations?

I don't know of a remote cable that doesn't reduce the audio quality -- something to keep in mind.

I was astonished at how much better my headphones sounded upon replacing the cable after two years. The normal cable had shorted out to the point that I had to twist it a certain way to get the signal to both channels. Due to this, I switched to the remote cable for a while. The difference between it and going back to a functioning normal cable was...well, like I said, astonishing; like going from fake and digital to realistic and analog, in comparison.

At any rate, I believe the V-MODA cables are all compatible with the FSP, and they are very durable. "Kevlar reinforced", "Can withstand over 1 million bends", etc.

I've got one of these and it fits the FSP perfectly fine:

Looks and feels great.

Well, I just logined to say that the headband of my pair cracked too a couple of hours ago. Damn you Focal! Such a masterpiece in terms of sonic qualities and such a sh*t in terms of construction! The good thing is that the clamp is much lighter now and headphones are far more comfortable lol!

See! The headphones are so smart they "fix" themselves for you!

But yeah, that's totally unacceptable. Do you think Focal will fix it for you?

haha wow, that's crazy! Were you doing anything unusual when it cracked?

At least it didn't snap in half, and now you can enjoy superior comfort via inferior craftsmanship! :D

How long have you had them? I assume they cracked where they have the 2 screws by the headband pad?

I can see on my pair theres a lot of stress and seperation at that point when the headband is stretched out. I'm hoping the fact that i use the headband at maximum size should help reduce the overall stress and stop it cracking.

Bump!

I would like to know this as well.

I was just putting them on my head like I always do when I heard they sound like the petard exploded over my head. I actually thought headphones broke in half, but as you can see (or can't :) - sorry for bad quality ). the crack is as thick as hair, But it's in "unusual" place, so guys, this thing can break ANYWHERE in the headband, so...

I live in Russia, so as I said earlier, warranty politics and returns here are just words - if something breaks - it's ALWAYS your fault and you should fix it by yourself (mostly with adhesive tape and rude language :) )

I'm sorry to hear that.

I hope you can still enjoy the sound of the FSP without too much discomfort or annoyance. If mine crack that would kinda be devastating as I'm very OCD about my gear...

I can't do that exact comparison, but I can compare the Spirit Classics (very similar to Spirit Pros) to the Amperiors (which according to Tyll are basically the same as the HD25 Alu's). Personally, I think the Spirits are way better (though full disclosure, I think the Amperiors sound kinda crap even for the $170 I paid for my pair). The spirits are more defined, more musical, have more detail, a better and smoother frequency response, more punch, faster bass, less harsh but more detailed treble, etc.

Though again, I really don't like the Amperiors much, so it may be worth getting other opinions.

I looked closely at the original image, but still can't see the crack! It's odd that something so small would make such a difference in terms of clamping force.

Just to chime in with my Amperior experience:

FSP is easily the better headphone.

However I did really like the Amperior and at the price it's being offered at commonly $130~$150 it does present a better value for sure.
