Hopefully this isn't too dumb a question but is it possible to run the SP balanced with a special 3.5mm to XLR cable?

i dont think thats possible, and i dont know why you would

because I might get a headamp that sounds better through its balanced XLR input.

hmm, I personally dont believe in connectors altering the sound wether thats 3.5 or quarter inch or xlr..

But maybe you will be able to find a way.

Ok, thanks for the answer! Is there any other possible "downside" using an audio interface like Scarlett 2i2 instead of a more expensive headphone amplifier? I mean, is there lika a bigger chance that my Scarlett 2i2 will "color" the sound or something like that...

The stock cable in FSP is connected to one cup, so I don't see how it can be run balanced.

I would make your own conclusion on this, as its pretty much impossible to find an honest answer from audio enthousiasts :D some people will say their 1 mil dollar amp is better than the objective combo, thats why its a enthousiast forum (no offence ofcourse)

But I will leave this here, for you to make your own conclusion: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/high-end-pc-audio,3733.html

While I dont agree with everything they test here, and I do believe certain amps/dacs will make music sound different.

I still think its difficult to distinguish them in a blind test.

I hope I've answered your question

Okay, thanks for clarifying.

In order to run balance you need a dedicated negative line for each side since they carry the same positive signal in reverse polarity. Single ended shares the ground which of them is the negative. You can have a pair of headphones wired for balanced and use an adapter to feed them a single ended signal but you cannot have a single ended wired headphones with an adapter to feed them from a balance amp. You will burn the amp.

So I have about 100 hours on the X5 and running the Spirit Pro and it's truly all I can ask for in a portable system. I know there will be better DAPs and headphones in the future but I want to say this is my end game for now. I'm very happy with this combo, such a high level of sound from a portable system that is relatively affordable. Such clarity, transparency, balance, and openess to the sound.

Any FSP owners thinking about X5 I say go for it. You will be very happy like me.

* on a side note: After several months the comfort factor for the FSP has become "very comfortable" for me. It started as "acceptable" for me but the months of usuage has softened it up a lot; it conforms to my head and ears so much better now.

My ears are sort of inbetween. I can wear them as circumaural or supra-aural. I usually wear them circumaural, folding my ears inside the cups a little bit, sort of squeezing them inside. Strange how this is still comfortable for me, but it is.

I think the crazy awesome sound quality does have me a little bias, trying to see the best side of the FSP.

The momentums were closer to supra-aural for me. I know they're basically the same size, but the FSP's extra width helps me squeeze my ears inside. I think if the momentums fit you then the FSP should be the next headphone you get. Focal has given a blessing to those with small ears and a curse to those with bigger ears. Haha.
