Help with possible speaker problem please

I found a guy local to me selling some energy rc-30's. The only issue is he says the volume from time to time will go low for a bit and then back to the normal volume is was at. He doesn't know if the problem is from the speakers, the wiring or his receiver.

I am no speaker expert but I am guessing it is more likely a receiver issue as opposed to a speaker one. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can shed some light?

I doubt it would be a speaker issue, but I suggest taking an amp + source to his place and hooking them up to the speakers before you buy.

He said we can demo it. The only thing was he said it doesn't always have the problem, sometimes it does and other times not. I would figure if it is a speaker issue it would likely either work or not work completely.

Exactly.

BTW: I have the Energy R50s and used to have the RC-10s. Good speakers. What kind of price is he offering for the R-30s?

He wanted $75 bucks and said they are in great shape aside from that volume issue I mentioned. He emailed earlier and said his brother ended up taking them though :/

How are the CF-50's? I found a guy selling a pair brand new in the boxes for $225.

That's too bad about the R-30s.

I haven't heard the CF-50s, although I have heard the CB-10, one of the bookshelves in that series. The RC series is a little notch up, but $225 sounds pretty good for some big towers like the CF-50s smily_headphones1.gif

My mistake they are actually cf-30s not 50s.

Is the RC series really that much better? I'm going to give craigslist another look and see what I find.

The RC series generally considered a step up over the CF/CB series. Whether it's "that much better" only you would be able to say.

True. Kind of nice to also buy new speakers over used as you really never know how they treated.

Any recommendations for a budget pair of towers? Main use would be music only.

On a side note I have a pair of Energy 22.2's but years ago the woofer on one just stopped working, no idea why. I was going to take it in and get it looked at but do you have any idea what would cause it?
