PC Battlefield 4 How to set up Asus Realtek audio with headset

Hi.  I have an ASUS P8z77 V Pro motherboard, Windows 8.1, Realtek 892 sound and a Sennheiser PC 360 headset. I am looking to enhance footstep detection and have read where people purchase an Astro 2013 mix amp to do this. Is it necessary? Also, the sound seems to be pretty good using the analog rear output of the motherboard is a standalone sound card necessary?  Thank you for your input.  Tom

I use a Xonar DG, which has a headphone amp built in that helps quite a bit (I have the PC350). I also use Dolby Headphone which greatly enhances my ability to position sound, it's a binaural surround effect. Onboard is kind of weak, but I haven't touched onboard for a long time. The biggest disappointment has always classically been the microphone input quality, as most onboard mic ports add a lot of noise.

Is the Dolby Headphone a free downloadable? The mic sounds good to others and so far no complaints of noise on my onboard.

The only binarual surround I'm aware of that can be paired with any sound card is Razer Surround. Dolby Headphone is a feature of the specific sound card in my case.

Thank you.  I downloaded the Razer Surround and tried it with my PC360 head set and the motherboard output.. It tracks well without having to adjust the calibration settings in the test mode.  Not sure I need an external card yet.  If I can connect a mix amp from Astro to the optical output on the motherboard will it help?
