Need help choosing Over ear headphones + amp for ~$350 for Jazz

Hello Everyone,

This is my first time posting, and I was hoping to get some advice for a home setup. I hope this post isn't too long, I have tried to organize it well. I have done my research, and I am leaning towards the Beyerdynamic DT880 250 Ohm with an O2 amp.

Source:

My PC, either the motherboard/front panel or my Logitec G110 keyboard, depending on what works best. I have been working on gathering my music in flac, but I do have some low quality music, 127 kbps, not as important, I am working to replace them, but I would be interested to know if something would sound bad enough to need to switch to my old headphones for these or YouTube videos.

Background:

I currently am using the Bose AE2 for at home, and the MEElectronics A151 IEMs for travel and noise isolation when I need them. I actually like the A151s better than my Bose, but they irritate the inside of my ear after a while. I am looking for something that will be a large and noticeable step up to the Bose.

Music:

I listen to Jazz, my favorite artists being Christ Potter and the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra. I have never liked vocals very much, so they are not important. I love the sound of saxophone (I play tenor myself), so I would rank that as most important, if it matters at all.

Other information:

Isolation does not matter to me. I current have a roommate, but he has his own headphones (ATH-M50) and says he does not mind if I have open headphones. He does have a mechanical keyboard though, but I do not see this being a problem, and I will graduate and move out by the summer anyways.

I have considered other headphones listed below. I am mostly concerned that the information I found by searching the forums of this site are outdated. I did not see any newer headphones in this price range that seemed like they were worth it. I also do not have a way to try these out before I buy, I am planning on buying these through amazon and checking the return policy, as it seems like it is easy to return to amazon. I did go to CES and tried on some Beyerdynamics, a different model, but I think the fit is generally the same across them, and they were really comfortable.

Other Headphone:

Sennheiser 600's (These are a bit pricey, and I am hesitant to spend that much if I don’t know if I will love them)

Audio Technica ATH-AD900X (Or maybe A900X?)

Sennheiser 598

Shure SRH940

AKG Q701 (or K702)

These ones I am more unsure about but I looked at them:

Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro'

SoundMagic HP100

NAD Electronics VISO HP50

I don't know anything about amp matching with the others, I am not quite sure how that works. I feel like if an amp can drive a pair of headphones adequately, then a similar impedance headphones would work the same. I am guessing this has something to do with the frequency response of the amp and headphones not actually being flat?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi,

I think DT880s are a very good pick for your requeriments. I haven't tried O2 yet, I use mine paired with Fiio E07K or Fiio E10 (Both DAC/AMPs) and they sound very good.

Best Luck!

I have not done that much research into Amps, and none into DACs, but I have seen people say they used the O2 with the DT880. My current plan is to just get the amp and see how that works, then probably get a DAC later. Those DAC/Amplifier combos do look nice though, I will have to check them out.

Hello.

I have ATH A900X . You would buy it used for 150 on ebay. You don't need an amp.

If you can spend 350 I would buy a Fiio X3. You can not believe the sound with ATHs

Today I received a used Westone 3. I think the sound is better than the ATHs.

I saw the ATH A900 as another top pick for Jazz, but I also thought that open headphones had a better sound stage, and that this was better for Jazz, so wouldn't the AD900X (The open ones) work better?

Also, is the Fiio X3 a music player? I would rather have something I could connect to my PC.
