Is this the correct way to set up my DAC

I just bought the sennheiser hd558's and a jds labs ODAC without the built in amp. I read that plugging my headphones directly into the dac without an amp will decrease quality. So I am thinking...can I use the rca plugs in the back and plug them into my home theater receiver and then plug my 558s into the 3.5mm spot? Will that help the quality or is this a completely ridiculous solution? Any help is appreciated!

Try it, see if it helps.

You've got it right, the ODAC simply takes a digital stream over USB from your computer and produces a line level output. This output doesn't have enough power to drive headphones properly.

Your receiver will power headphones (most are decent but nothing special) them alright. If you do decide you want a proper headphone amp you can just connect the amp to the ODAC in the same way.
