Hey just out of curiosity what are these phones on my 100+ head fi'er automatic avatar?

I believe those are the Shures in the $100-$200 range, but I am not positive. I read about them, but I cant remember the comments. I think they either have a harsh treble or have a very similar sound signature to the m50s.

Anyways I listened to my uncles Q701s and they were the same sound quality as my mad dogs, but different sound signatures. They are pretty much two sides of the same coin, the coin being sound quality, and the sides being opposite sound signatures. I found the q701s to be a bit boring for me. The q701s sound signature seem to more than excel at treble detail and sound stage, but they are ok at mid range detail along with lacking bass. The treble never seemed harsh. The mad dogs on the other hand excel at mid range quality and detail with great bass quality but not quantity (imo). I do not think either are easy to drive. I only drove the q701s off my DX100 so I am not positive, but they seemed to take whatever power I threw at them (could just be the driver accepting a wide range of power).

Why are t50rp mods so bloody expensive? Do people install different drivers or are they just reshaping a few things and stuffing some cotton in there?

I ordered some t50rp last night but then i hurried up and cancelled :D

You are paying for the engineering more then anything at that point. There is a reason why there are $10k turntable cartridges, and I am pretty sure it is not the materials used. Some of the people actually measure the changes they are making which is not always the easiest to do without certain equipment.

You can try modding your own. I have heard that people get good results modding their own. There is also ZMF T50rps on ebay for affordable prices. Just be aware the T50rp like most planar magnetics is not an efficient driver. It takes a decent amount of amping to drive them to good potential.

The Fiio E12 being the best cheap portable amplifier and the magni the cheapest desktop amp.

that is my current amp paired with ODAC. Not the best but i had the feeling that would suffice for now.

So we've narrowed it down to

m50s

q40s

srh840

t50rp

k701

DT series

m-80

I feel like were getting there.

How about the DT 1350 or whichever those were.. the more affordable ones of the tesla series.
