Looking for Upgrade from HD650

Hello everyone. I'm new here, and first of all sorry for my somewhat bad English.

I'm 19 year old full time student, part time worker from Finland.

Ive been using Sennheiser HD650 with ORB Jade-1 for about 6 months now.

I like how comfortable HD650 are and the fact that i can listen them from early morning to late night, but i just want more! Not that i wouldnt like HD650 but i think there's this small "veil" which bothers me.

My budget is around 1000 euros.

The models i'm interested are Audeze LCD-2 and Sennheiser HD800. Unfortunately i dont have chance to listen them where i live. Ive been reading about both of these day and night and i've come to an understanding that HD800 is nothing like HD650. And i am kind of looking something like HD650. HD800 might be too bright? for my music taste.

Now about LCD-2 im scared about the uncomfortable part i'm reading. Would the Vegan ear pads help with this? I kind of want same kind of pads than in HD650. Is there improvement in soundstage from HD650 to LCD-2? I know that HD800 would be the winner in this part, but the brightness and harsh treble what everyone talks about scares me.

Also i hate excess bass, it just ruins the music for me. But i dont think this would be problem with either HD800 or LCD-2.

My music taste is fairly wide. I like: Electronic, Trip-Hop (Massive Attack), Ambient, Jazz, J-Rock/Pop, Soundtracks, Trance, Metal and Some vocaloid songs (some say that vocaloid with HD800 is painful experience)

My last-fm profile: http://www.last.fm/user/phidesu

Most of my music files are FLAC or 320kbps. And my listening sessions vary from 1 hour to 10 hours.

Its not cheap upgrade so i would appreciate some opinions and some insight from more experienced Head-fiers :3

Looking at your song preferences, you really should go with the lcd 2. It's brighter than the hd650 and has a much more present sub bass. The vegan earpads brings the treble up a notch as well.

The reason i don't recommend the hd800 is... it's not too spectacular with metal and electronic music with a good bass line, i feel like it just doesn't have enough body. Also, the treble will be painful on those j/k-pop/rock music.

Overall, the lcd 2 is much more genre friendly. (make sure you get the revision 2)

HE-500 does those genres well.

What are the major differences between LCD-2 and HE-500? (apart from the price)

Also if i order LCD-2 from audezes website, is it always rev 2?

I believe T1 is similar to HD650. LCD2 is not a good choice if you really like HD650.

FYI, I think 6 month is not long enough to appreciate the beauty of HD650.

Ive also considered T1 but the lack of replaceable cable is a big letdown for me. Of course with soldering it would be possible but still...

Im leaning towards LCD2, it just seems safe bet to go with. Im still gonna wait and think about this..

I think the original cable for T1 is good enough. Changing headphone cables are wasting time based on my experience.

For HD650, I tried many cables for it to pursue a better performance. However, it turns out the original one is the best.

Oh yeah, Im still going with stock cable too.

But if im gonna pay around 1000 euros for headphones i think it would be good to have that option. (in case i break the cable or something like that)

It seems you are looking for a keeper. However, I think it is possibility that you will sell it in one year. That is us.

Many many people (the majortiy and including me) will say otherwise, that the lcd-2 is basically a hd650 on steroids. Their sound signature is similar, except that the lcd 2 has better low frequency extension, isn't as dark as the hd650 but still smooth, and has better mids.

I was one click away from ordering LCD-2's but now im thinking of sticking with HD650 and maybe switching to tube amp in future.....

I just love the smoothness of HD650, maybe this is the headphone for me.

But who knows, i might change my mind if i spend too much time here.

If you have to ask that question, then it doesn't really matter. There is no such concept as "value" in summit-fi... tongue.gif
