Dolby headphone through spdif possible on an asus xonar dx?

After doing a lot of research for my new computer I had finally decided on buying an asus xonar DX and a fiio e17. I was just about to buy everything when I came across a review that stated that dolby headphone only goes out through the headphone jack. Is there anyway to force it out through spdif so I can connect the e17 (through the unified drivers perhaps)? If this is in fact impossible is there a suitable alternative (I don't really have a fixed budget) such as a creative card with CMSS-3D Headphone out? I plan to use these with either the dt990 250ohm or the dt770 250ohm - are these good choices or are there better alternatives?

Thanks

The Asus Xonar DX sound card can output Dolby Headphone surround sound (digital) thru the DX's optical output.

You also have the option of connection a 3.5mm (analog) stereo male to male cable from the DX's Front jack to the line-input on the E17,

this way you could compare the E17's WM8740 DAC chip to the Xonar DX's CS4398 DAC chip, see which sounds better.

That's great news! So once I set everything up on the computer is it simply Computer ---> xonar---> spdif ---> e17 ---> beyer's?

I see you have every version of the beyer's that I am currently looking at. I don't know if you have used them for gaming but do you recommend any version over the other? I was all set on the dt990's but the sound leakage has really got me worried. I am going to test them out myself but is the leakage as bad as other's make it out to be? Soundstage is important for gaming but if the dt770's aren't that much worse I might just go them.

Thanks for the help.

If you have a need to block noise, then get the Audio Technica ATH-A900X closed headphones.

I like them better then the DT770s

The A900X's are only 40-Ohm, so very easy for the E17 to drive

Buy them used off eBay.

And get the Hifiman Velour ear pads too, $10+shipping
