I hear ya man. I had to tell the guys not to spill the beans when I had a local mini meet at my place. She had no idea that headphones could ever cost as much as my HD800s...

Hmm, sounds like that could've been the basis for a HF episode of Everybody Loves Raymond... But of course Debra would've found out about the HD800s before the show ended wink.gif

You snag the one from RazorDog? My willpower all but crumpled at that price. It probably doesn't make sense. Then again, trying to explain this hobby to anyone else doesn't either.
"You spent how much on a pair of headphones? 😱"

Most definitely!

If they are anything like HE-4 and HE-500 then it would make sense. Those are different enough to nicely complement each other.

I believe you are right. A lot of people at the meets describe them as being a lot different from eachother. I will most likely have it or the 400 for the 4th time. Its hard to get the clarity and bass extension I get from hifiman in other open backs so I default to them now. I would ideally like a headphone tuned like an open back th600 with fuller mids and then skip out on orthos for the second pair. But that aint happening.

I see the irony in your statement. For me it's not worth the fight to try and explain that all her purses, shoes, and clothes add up to much more than my one headphone purchase (that I actually use more than one night out a year).

Lies of omission can save relationships evil_smiley.gif

The bigger the physical size of the purchase the more likely my wife notices. I could buy a $1600 CIEM and she would be much less likely to notice, let alone ask.

That said, just start talking in audiophile terms often with her and you can see their eyes glaze over as their mind wanders to places the find less boring. Then, when she sees the new headphone she'll likely avoid a conversation as her subconscious will remind her how boring the last was.

You. Could also play the present trade game. Buy her something big so she won't care when she sees your next purchase.

I just thought these up...nooooooo I've never tried them. I would never think of employing any of these shady tactics for my upcoming HE-400i purchase. 😁😇

But really, don't lie to your wife. She'll eventually find out. Happy wife, happy life.

If you added up my wife's shoe purchases for one year you could significantly reduce our National Debt.  My latest plan has been working out beautifully. I have been doing a little moonlighting in the evening or on Saturday. I asked that the payment for the work be made via paypal.

First world problems... don't even gets me started on whisk(e)y

Would help if the first world stopped printing so much money, then I'd be well on my way to be able to afford some headphone upgrades... With the depreciation of the local currency over the past year our audio goods have become 25-30% more expensive... :(

God tell me about it...HPs became 20% costlier and this has a cascading effect on customs duty as well. 25-30% is right. And yet, one keeps buying stuff! I need a sanity check very very soon! Anyway, back to the topic. HE 400i versus HE 4 comparisons would be welcome (unless I've missed it). The 4 works beautifully with my speaker amp off the taps.

I haven't spent any money on headphone related gear for a year now. I'd love to buy a Schiit stack consisting of the Bifrost Uber and the Lyr 2 but the exchange rate is too unfavourable currently so I'm holding off on that. Also planning to buy dual SVS subwoofers, but currently holding off on that too! Hopefully quantitative easing has boosted US audio manufacturers' coffers enough to offset the loss of emerging market customers.
