Shame he did the finalized review with just the Focus pads, and not tried the Focus-A pads on those as well. It might have won him over some more.

And that's an off-topic post, Eric.

No really, it brings high hope for the 400i as well!

Hey guys,

Do you think the new amp/DAC from iFi will be suitable for the HE-400i's? The specs from headphone.com (http://www.headphone.com/products/hifiman-he-400i) say that the HE-400i's have a sensitivity of 94 db and an impedance of 35 ohms.

Meanwhile, the new iDSD Micro while in Normal Mode (see here: http://ifi-audio.com/portfolio-view/micro-idsd/) continuously powers a headphone of 32 ohms around 950 mW. I worry it might not be enough as I remember some comments from the HE-500 thread that said the HE-500 needed at least a watt but I'm not sure if those comments are accurate.

Thanks,

Garraty

if you are worried that "Normal Mode" on the micro iDSD isn't enough power for 400i, why wouldn't you just flip-the-switch up to Turbo mode and really crank up the headphone juice?

Turbo mode dishes out more power than many desktop amps!

I'm not worried at all my micro iDSD awaiting pairing with HE-560 will be "underpowered".

Do you believe the iDSD Micro would work as a sufficient amp and DAC for the HE-400i then?

The 400i I tried ran pretty well out of everything, including my FiiO E18 which is only ~320mw at 35 ohms. It even sounded alright out of a phone.

If I didn't, I wouldn't have bought it for my HE-560.  (which is harder to drive.)

as far as DAC/Amp pairing with these headphones- don't know yet if it will be perfect, or just great.    :D

but I suspect it will be at least "Great", based on the quality of the nano iDSD which gets rave reviews.

the nano has been a gem for me at the desktop, in addition to iPhone/iPad playback.

Haha, all right then. Thanks for your thoughts on the matter. I just hope that the two have a good synergy.

Yes, the synergy is key but no way to know unless both are in hand....

from the micro iDSD thread (and nano iDSD reviews), it's obvious that iFi puts a ton of engineering and features inside,

but focuses on a very "organic and realistic" sound from the Burr Brown DACs.   the HE-560 due to it's wonderful detail, micro-dynamics and soundstage wouldn't require a "super analytical" or overly detailed DAC/Amp to "boost" any of those characteristics.

so if iFi can (improve and) deliver on detailed, realistic, natural sonics beyond their nano iDSD- I'm expecting the synergy (and power) to match up well with HE-560.

Note:  am not stating the iFi micro or nano iDSD darker, muted, not-detailed.  far be it.  the realistic drums out of the nano iDSD surpassed the GeekOut in an earlier comparison of mine.

if the 400i is a bit "darker" or more laid back I don't think the iFi would do any injustice to it either.

except you might not flip on the iFi Xbass feature with the 400i as frequently.

;)

Is ifi iCAN enough to get some enjoyment out of the HE-400i's?

So, I'm thinking of getting myself a Schiit Asgard 2 to go with my T1 and the 400i. Anyone have thoughts or opinions on that? Eventually I would replace the T1 with a Bifrost (once funding becomes more available)

Asgard 2 is definitely a nice amp that'd probably work well with IEMs if you have any / get any. Has enough power for HE-400i and has a quality sound. I support that Schiit :D

Awesome! I think I'll pick that up once I have the funding for both headphones and amp

It should be more than enough power-wise...synergy-wise you just got to take a chance on it. You'll have a return window on it if not.

iBasso PB2 (and LME49990 opamp kit) + balanced cables into 400i should be phenomenal....fairly neutral, highly dynamic powerful portable amp + a non-neutral can.
