I also have the new pads on the way for my HE6. Are they the FocusPad-A? Ordered a couple of weeks ago and shipped yesterday. I didn't know there was more than one version of the new pads.  It appears they are thicker on one side. Does the thicker side go to the back to angle the drivers somewhat?

Yes, it goes to the back, pad seams facing roughly 6 o'clock/downwards.
The pads you ordered are production focus pads.
The Focus A pads are preorder pads and they became available only recently.
All this talk got me real curios about the Focus A pads... I love everything about the 560 but the soundstage size, which I am still getting used to. Mind you the rather small overall size is still very detailed! So no complaints.
Still, I wonder if it is due to the pads and if A pads will do better.
We'll see...

There are two sets of Focus pads, one called Focus and one called Focus-A.  They both are angled pads. The production pads (ones that will ship with the HE-560 and HE-400i) are the Focus Pads.

Thanks guys. I checked the HiFiMan website and see they have both the Focus and the Focus-A listed now. When I ordered my pads the Focus-A pads weren't listed. So I am getting the Focus pads.

Apparently the Focus-A pads got sold out very soon after they were initially put onto the site, so it's not that terrible for you (geteiltes leid ist halbes leid, as the folks say).

Hi jerg,

I haven't been following the HE560 thread for some days, so am curious, are there any conclusions about these two types of earpads in terms of sonic differences? I'm getting the HE560 or HE400i at some point in the future, and wonder if it's worthwhile to get the preorder pads.

No conclusions, but measurements and some impressions seem to implicate that the Focus-A pads tune HE560s to be more neutral than the Focus pads. Look to the first post of that thread for the measurements, and as to listening impressions comparing the two, they are few and far in-between. Personally I concur but that's just me.

If i can get a he500 for 400 CAD shipped, would you guys still recommend the 400i over it?

Depends on how much you can get the 400i for. (Sorry, I'm in the US, so I don't know Canadian prices.) In my opinion, if the the 500 and the 400i are around the same price (even if the 400i is a little bit more, like at the most 10% more), go for the 400i because it pretty much sounds the same at the 500 but the 400i is a lot more comfortable in its headband design and its weight. Otherwise, you could really consider that HE-500 deal.

This is coming from somebody who has had the fortunate opportunity to sample both the 400i and the 500.

Wow that's 275 euro. Do it!

Went with the He500 =), the 400i will be at least 100 CAD more which is 100 more $ I could use for tuition =).

And the HE-500 are proven winners! If you ever decide to sell you will never lose money on them.

If the 400i turn even better, he might...
The 400i would be a better buy IMO...

I highly doubt it for that price.

It's not that much difficult to beat HE-500... HE-4 are already better and also more comfortable so I fully expect the HE-400i to be at least on the same level (as HE-500 if not HE-4).
