Do these have the gorgeous mids/vocals of the HE-500?

I haven't heard an unmodded HE-500 unfortunately, however, I can say that vocals were a strength of the HE-400i ;)

More clarity and tactility than 500 vocals. Still gorgeous, but less congested.

I wonder if the 400i will come in the same packaging as the 560... Anyone know?

The HE-560 and HE-400i will come in different packaging.

HE-560 is the nicest packaging and presentation ever from HiFiMAN.

HE-400i will be a very nice presentation and superior to what the company did in previous HE Series.

I liked the previous box.
Sturdy and practical.

The new box looks nicer but I doubt it is as sturdy and the sliding top is less convenient (nit picking).

Will the HE-400i come with the same sleeved cable?

From what I was told at Chicago, the 400i will not come with the fabric cable.

The cable on the 400i was fine to me. Kinda thin, but I tend to like Grado-esque garden hoses, so YMMV.

No. Neither of the new ones does.

HE-560 is shipping now from HiFiMAN though we are filling backorders initially. HE-400i will follow about 30 days behind, likely shipping in early August.

What are your thoughts on the HE-400i based on your impressions? How do they compare with a headphone such as the HD600 overall? My next headphone upgrade is probably going to be my last one so I want to ensure that I make a good choice. Thanks!

I disagree with that statement, but YMMV. The 600 is a good phone too of course, but IMO not on the same level.

Yeah, the 400i may have overall better "balance" in that the mids are a little further back than the He-500, but that Mid "magic" isn't as much there in the 400i, not particularly a bad thing though and I like that, as it makes me want to keep my he-500 and get one of the new models at some point instead of thinking I need to trade off to get the 400i.  I like the sound of all the Hifiman phones, and find the biggest improvement to be in the comfort of the new headphones.

Did you get to hear the 400i at the Chicago meet Zach?
