Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion - Page 26

Excellent write up PianoMan and tinyman, thanks :).

The HE-400i might the perfect companion for the HE-560 for the more intimate/fun moments. I always wanted to get the HE-500 back, I suppose the 400i will do just fine as a secondary headphones.

Any info on the availability?

I have a feeling that after the 560 is officially released and all pre-orders (and samples) are successfully handed out without a hitch (issues) HiFiMan should begin focusing on the 400i.

I too was at the meet today and while I could probably never write something as detailed as the other two guys, I will say this: out of all of the other headphones at the meet, I went back to listen to the 400i multiple times and I borrowed them from the HiFiMan crew to listen to on other setups. I definitely plan to buy these headphones the moment they become available.

I asked them about when they would be out and their response was that it would be sometime in August, probably about a week after the 560s. On the other hand, the info sheet that was on the table said sometime this month.

These were probably my favorite headphones at the meet and I would recommend listening to them if you ever get the chance

Pretty sure you meant a month after the 560, not a week

Yes to Jerg's comment.
And I kept coming back to the 400's too. The combination of attainable price and really how good it was even compared to top cans there made me keep coming back too. It sounded pretty sweet on some of the Ray Samuels stuff but very dark. The Audio-HD amps were nice too, but I felt it was really something special on some of the Schiit gear there. Excited about this phone already! (And good job to Jerg on counseling them on pads. Those pads were divine!)

The 500 had a very special, pleasing tonality. It wasn't neutral but the balance and tuning was very pleasant. If the 400i can replicate the magic at a cheaper/lighter pakcage I will need to get one. I was sad to hear that they're discontinuing the HE-500.

I liked the sound of the he-400 more than the 500s. Maybe the 460i is somethin for me?

I haven't tried the 400, but the 400i definitely sounded more similar to a 500 than to a V shaped frequency. The 400i had more bass, but it was fairly even across most of the frequency. No tizzy highs, and the mids were not recessed. As has been stated, HiFiMan has tried to make the 400i similar to the 500. Sorry :P
The new cans are also a lighter sound. I might suggest one of the Fostex THx00 cans if you want that U or V shaped response and dark sound though. Or you can just enjoy the the 400 as it is. (The new cans might complement your 400 but I'm doubtful they'd replace)
YMMV though, I'm just going of the graphs of the 400 and what others such as the manufacturer have said.

Unless I was misunderstanding what they said, I am pretty sure that it will be a week after the 560. Though I could have heard wrong and they said a couple weeks after instead

560 should be released by the end of June/early July. August would be at least a month later then.

HE-560 is starting to ship from HiFiMAN directly now for replacements. Barring any hitches, we should be shipping a good supply in early July which is not that far away.

For HE-400i, plan for early August. HiFiMAN has to focus on HE-560 right now to fill the pipeline and get some inventory. That will take at least a few weeks, possibly longer.

I'm actually hoping the 400i is on the darker side of neutral to counter my he-6.

I had my he6 for sale but pulled it down because my amp is here and my interconnect is on the way. Does anyone know if having both the 560 and 400i makes sense to them. Do they sound different enough.

Is the 400i brighter than the 500?

The 400i is definitely on the darker side of neutral. It's not brighter than the 500, in fact if anything it may be just a tad thicker in sound. But it's also a vastly more open and light sound. I'd say having both makes some sense, as the 400i takes only light amplification and could be portable, or for relaxing listening, while the 560 is great for critical listening. You get a LOT of the technical ability of the 560 in the 400i though, just a slightly different sound sig, so YMMV.
