The 400i/560 comparison should be coming tomorrow [w/stock grills and focus pads].
I'll also do a grill modded 400i/560 comparison sometime next week if everything goes as planned.
More stuff might be added over time [or per request]

Sweet.. my local dealer has the HE560 in stock which I briefly auditioned and liked very much.  He's getting the HE400i in the next week or two and will hold a pair for me.  I'll then audition both side by side and decide.  Looking forward to your comparisons.

Since I'll be using the new HP around the house with an AK100 MkII or MacBook Air/Dragonfly, I'm already leading towards the HE400i.
Should be an exciting month.

For me right now:

HE-400 w/ FocusPads > HE-400i > HE-400 w/ velour pads

The HE-400i does so much right but the bass simply doesn't match the HE-400. The Focuspads bring the HE-400 halfway to the HE-400i whilst retaining the bass.

I have been reading this thread very keenly and to me it looks like the best combination of bass and vocals under $1000 is the Fostex TH-600 only. What do you think ?

Perhaps that's the headphone for you but there hasn't been much discussion of it in this thread.  I think someone mentioned that they wish there was an open-type TH600 but that doesn't (yet) exist.

Interesting impressions so far between the HE500 and 400i. If what I'm seeing in this thread is right, I'm quite disappointed like Mad Lust Envy that these are not like an improved 400 but more close to the HE500 sonics. Dat bass was glorious.

TH-500 is an open planar coming out soon I think?

From early reports the TH500RP headphone/prototype has poor bass extension and a thick mid bass. So they'd need to improve the bass response a bit to be as extended as the TH600. Although for the original persons comment, I've never considered the TH600 to be remotely close to best vocals.

The DX1000, FAD Pandora Hope VI, ZMF x Vibro would be the three closed cans I'd have ahead for bass and especially vocals, at least over the TH600.

Bad naming, but I sure love what I'm hearing about them.

The HE500 was nearly my perfect headphone.  My two complaints were a slight lack of top-end sparkle, and a bass that was overwhelming and a tad fuzzy on certain tracks.

Can't wait to get my 400i tour unit to hear it for myself.

Just pulled the trigger on these. I'm expecting a good cost/performance ratio.

Cool I am demoing the HE-400i and they are great. I will definitely get these cans later this year. I really enjoyed listening to Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats" on the HE-400i's, the vocals and instruments sound so nice .

Yeah I'm really disappointed about that as well. I remember Hifiman mentioned in this thread that they debated whether to give the HE-400i an elevated bass like the HE-400 or a more neutral one, and they opted for neutral. Imo that was the wrong choice. The HE-560 is the neutral phone from their new lineup, the HE-400i should be closer to the HE-400's sound sig (well at least it's bass). So many people love the 400 for it's bass, why toss that away?

But since it has seen it's release I suppose nothing can be done now. I wouldn't be opposed to a rev 2 with improved bass though
