This typically happens when people don't read the thread from the beginning as well. We should publicly say that at this point, Hifiman is still tweaking the design, and likely the sound signatures. The cans heard so far will still only give us an idea of what is coming. Speculating is ok, but please make sure you don't state things as fact people. Jerg is right.

Will the HE-400i be an improvement SQ-wise over the original HE-400? I'm planning to buy new headphones come summer and HE-400 were under my consideration along with the Sennheiser HD 650. Better comfortability and possible SQ improvements might tip the scales towards the new HE-400i.

You've seen the new design?  The fully curved one?  Or are you referring to the one they were using (on the OP)?  I actually do like the design that's on the OP, it has to grow on you, but it is pretty nice.

Referring to the OP as to differentiate from the older traditional rounded headbands.  There has been no announcement of new rounded suspension design.  As has been said, it's just speculation.

Most likely, yes.

Wow, it is great to see all the interest in the upcoming HiFiMAN HE models.

Here are a few responses to answer comments and questions:

Headband- the new design has nothing to do with cost of manufacturing. The cost is in the tooling. Goals were to decrease weight, increase comfort and improve serviceability. The "squareish" design is to increase travel so it accommodates wide range in head sizes.

Appearance- feedback we had at CES to the appearance of the samples was universally positive.

Sonic signatures- yes, they are still being tweaked so any comment on what they will sound like is premature. My sense is that HE-400i will sound more like current HE-500 and HE-560 will sound like HE-6 with a slightly wider soundstage.

Efficiency- sensitivity will be same or better than current models.

All aspects of the designs are still being improved. Our CES showing was a preview to take advantage of such a large international launch and to get feedback. Official launch will take place as we get closer to delivery.

Thanks to everyone for their interest. If you are in the NYC area and want to hear the HE-560, Fang will have it at AC Gears this Thursday evening Jan 23rd. www.acgears.com

If your sense is correct, that is really good news! Specially considering the HE-500 is considerably more expensive than expected for the HE-400i. And the same applies to HE-6 and HE-560.

Efficiency-wise, I am settled. My EF-5 drives the HE-500 perfectly fine in my opinion. But I am sure newcomers will benefit from better efficiency! Not to mention the portable amps out there...

For me personally, I've always preferred the signature of the he500 over all the hifiman offerings. It's a little darker...more lush mids...just right in my comfort zone. Then add the reduced weight and it makes a very compelling package.

I hope the HE-560 will be a lot easier to drive than the HE-6.

Not choosing between the 400i and 560 yet.

I'd wait 'till the first reviews start appearing [hopefully after the ACGears event? If anyone can attend.]

I've chosen based on the objective described by Peter. That is enough for me. Regardless of what happens with the tweaking, the objective and general direction will remain the same through production. The 560 will be geared towards airy, resolving and neutral. I prefer a touch darker and lush which is closer to the he500/400i.

Yeah... Well I am not really sure yet :] I will need some impressions to sway me either way probably.

Agreed on the wait and see approach. I like the 400s very much but it doesnt seem like I am fully satisfied with them. The 400i might fit the bill nicely at that price point but we will have to wait and see (hear).
