Correct, these are just aftermarket pads. The quality is good, pleather is soft and doesn't irritate even with extended listening (had  them on for 4hrs straight last night). The padding itself is a bit stiff initially but even after 4hours they've become softer or conformed. As for sound, I'm somewhat fighting a head cold at the moment so I wouldn't trust what I'm hearing. However, the bass has more impact with the pads it seems. More than even HF non-angled pleather. It does sound a bit like it's bleeding into the mids but this could be due to the lack of venting. I might try a back vent opening mod, similar to Jerg pads to see if that takes the bass away from the mids. Again it's not drastic but with certain songs with the mid-bass emphasized it encroaches into the mids.

I wonder how those same pads would sound on my W1000x?

I'll know soon enough honestly. I'm getting new pads onto my D2k and I'll have the old OEM pads to test

but man that L3000 Leather feels so Good! Not sure If I can part with it :3

Bumping the hype train, anyone been able to get some sort of response regarding a possible future demo/loaner?

Thanks.

Well, I expected them to sound promising :D

We'll see how different the 400i and 560 are though... Very interested in a comparison with the 400/500 as well...

Damn, Acgears was where I bought my RE-400s, when I went to NYC for (Canadian) Thanksgiving. Wish I had the means to go back!

There's even a brief mention of the Jade 2:

Also tucked away in a corner of the booth and somewhat hidden under a cloth was an early prototype of an electrostatic headphone to be release in the future. They had lovely large ovoid shaped earpieces with wood trim around the edges and metal headband. They sounded quite promising but possibly underpowered—no matter, these are prototypes and sound impressions don't mean much at this point. Nice to know they're in the works though.

Really getting excited about hifiman right now. Never owned one, but it seems I will on the (hopefully) not too distant future smily_headphones1.gif

there are definitely some cool things happening at hifiman.  I wish there were some more listening impressions out there.  although, my suspicion is that reviewers are listening now, and impressions will be coming soon.  exciting.

The real questions that I just can't get out of my head...what will be the difference between the 400i and the 560? Will the 400i be huge bang for the buck? And most importantly, will the 560 really justify it's asking price at almost 2x the 400i?

Was the HE-500 worth double the price of the HE-400? biggrin.gif

It was-- before they slashed its price.

We had a great response to our preview of the upcoming HE-400i and HE-560. We expect to be delivering by April so this was not an official launch. That will come when we are closer to shipping.

Fang has gotten a lot of useful feedback and continues to tweak the new models. They are substantially lighter and more comfortable than current HE models, look better and sound great.

Anyone in the New York metro area is invited to come to AC Gears in Manhattan on Thursday January 23. We are showing our new HM-700 and HM-802 portable players which are available now. And we we will have a HE-560 and EF-6 on hand.

Thanks for your interest.

If Fang is taking suggestions, I suggest that he adds 4 pin mini XLRs to connect to the HE-560 and HE-400i ;)

Peter,

Great to have HiFiMan represented here. The level of excitement is very high and will grow. Wish I was in NYC next week!

So we have now moved from March to April on shipping the new models?

Yeah it almost sounds as though HE400i and 560 are in their own little pedigree, and very divergent from the push-pull HE400/500s.
