i know but still. Its the headband that bugs me. Their other headphones look so nice too, its a pity because something like this would definitely make me not want to buy them.

Kinda like the LCD X, if it came with wooden cups i would  buy it but because that cannot be done i am hesitant. They look great with wooden cups.

Im sure if hifiman changed the headband back to the original it would effect the sound. I know that if the LCD X has wooden cups it doesn't sound as good which is why their is no wooden cup option.

yeah. Maybe someday Hifiman will offer  them audio systems based on orthodynamic design, instead of regular bose, b&w systems...who knows:D

Aside from irony, what i mean original design is also essential for small companies to find own niche in this competitive market.

If you look at some of the on head pictures the headband looks very nice. The top piece flexes into an arc, it isn't perpendicular to the cups like the abyss. Other than that I would prefer metal gimbals, they look pretty sweet. That difference in weight from the 500s will be a godsend if they sound the same.

Anyone see any reason why the new HE560 cups/drivers wouldn't attach to the older HE500 headband/gimbals?

Just wondering...

I can't see screws at the end of the gimbals. Maybe it's another mechanism

I personally like the design but every person is different.  Perhaps the new Oppo would be more up your alley? minus the wood of course.

If the new headband attaches with screws, then I don't see why not...the cups appear to be the same size physically and the pads are said to be 'backwards compatible' and will fill the former HE-series.  The reverse is also speculated so that those who want to use the new headband style may with the older models, assuming they're made available.

Remember dreaming I had an akg k1000, probably borrowed, amd had my mom holding it which I wasnt't too glad about, looked away and suddenly it was gone... The feeling resembled the feeling I had when burning my HE-500s, actually.. Sorrily, I never got to listen to the k1000 as it dissappeared.. Bummer

Remember it had red cables..

The SR-009 is absolutely gorgeous, direct opposite of the abyss. The Japanese tend to have a better knack for making things that look nice, and Americans tend to make things that look like they've been injected with steroids and testosterone. Compare the aesthetics of the xbox one's controller to the ps4 controller; American cars to Japanese cars; the SR-009 to the Abyss (admit it, that thing looks like a trash compactor, except for your head). American-made product tend to have that macho, testosterone flavor about them, while Japanese products are balanced with grace and elegance - neither too masculine nor feminine looking. That said, headphones' looks are not that important to me. To me, the 400i and 560 look OK, nowhere near as hideous as the abyss.

TH900 cups are wood...........and Mark Lawton makes custom wood cups as well if you want them to be unique.
