tried out an awesome scotch during thanksgiving.

It was a north highland malt i believe, called caggenmore 25. Ever tried it tyson?

'Was a fine scotch, a cask strength too, maybe the best i've had yet. I had another scotch to, but totally forgot the name. My aunt got it in scotland, said its unavailable here, and said even over there it was 100 $ bottle!

I have never had that one, color me jealous Sounds pretty awesome though.

I did have a bit of Glenlivet 12 again tonight at a company dinner (it was all they had for scotch), it's just as boring as I remember it :-(

But now I'm enjoying Old Pulteny again, it's like a smokey version of the Dalmore.

Really! 25 years--given Tyson's description of the lesser Craggenmore, that must have been quite an experience.

Last night I did a comparo of the Glenlivet 12 with the Johnnie Walker Gold Label. The Glenlivet still strikes me as heavy on tropical fruit and light floral stuff--it IS getting a little boring. I think I'll dump the rest of my bottle on ice cream and cherries (yum!!).

The JWG again was smooth as silk--a very unusual mouth feel! This time I barely picked up the herbal thing in the JWG, but it did seem a little smoky. Last time I was comparing it with the Dalwhinnie and thought the JWG had no smoke. I conclude that the Dalwhinnie, though very light, is smokier than I thought!

I'm really keen on trying the Bruichladdich. I haven't seen the 17 y.o., but I think I can get a 50ml of the 15 y.o..

Yes, the craggenmore sounds very interesting. I find that many "lighter" scotches are much better at an older age, and the "heavy" scotches are better at younger age. I bet that the craggenmore at 25 years is quite something!!

Wow, you're indeed lucky to have the chance to try out the Craggenmore 25. I have a few bottles of Craggenmore 12 but have never seen a bottle of Craggenmore 25.

I wish i had tysons capability of describing it to you guys.


I will just say this, from what im capable of.

The finish to me was so polished, it tasted of the OAK wood i believe it was in an oak cask (sue me if im wrong) and it was definatly only me appreciating it there, as both of my cousins didnt like it (due to its cask strength i guess). They were happy with the merlot my aunt had as well.


It to me almost reminded me of lagavulin, but much much better. Definatly tasted the peat as well. I wonder if the bottles are available over the internet? I can only assume it's 100-200 dollar bottle if it was 100 over in scotland. She told me the guy who sold her the bottle looked like jon nash's imaginary friend from beautiful mind, i dont know if she was joking or not, but she kept saying it was him haha.

WOW! After thumbing through google, i absolutely CANNOT find this particular, only their 29 year going for around 300 or more!

I wish i knew how lucky i was, i woulda tried to take notes for you guys.

P.S Can you guys recommend me a bottle in the 80-150 range as a gift to my dad who doesn't know a fine single malt from jim beam black which he insists is the best ; ).

He hated my maclan cask strength btw, but he did actually like the spring bank 15. I want to get him something very special that we both like, be it a scotch or headphone (wont derail this thread, just recommendations please ; ) )
He prefers smokey and smooth to peaty and flavorful.

Clynelish 14 would be my top rec. Its a super bargain at only $50. It's got the maltiness and depth of a good highland, and the smoothness and smokiness of of an islay, although it is somewhat peaty.

An alternative he might like is Glen Garioch 15, which is malty and smoky, but not peaty at all.

And of course there's always Highland Park 18 and Oban 14, both are very good, malty, smoky, and not particularly peaty. The HP is sweeter and heavier, the Oban lighter and possibly more drinkable.

wow tyson u replied so quick. I gotta respect your devotion. Yea i think i wanna get him that Cylnelish, and a pair of sr60s. He really deserves a nice gift considering what i been my parents through lately. Thanks again.

I would second Tyson's recommendation of Oban 14, it is indeed bit smoother and easier to drink than most other fine single malts and plus it relatively cheap. In some shops it is possible to find a bottle of Oban 14 for under $50.

ok, well perhaps i should order online?
Any suggested scotch retailers i can order from at those types of prices??

I'm not sure of which particular online store that offers the best prices on single malts but I do know that last week when I was in Costco they had Oban 14 for $39.99.

I've been very curious about Balvenie, since two or three folks here have trashed it, but the illustrious Michael Jackson (what a name!) gives the "Doublewood" 12 yo (for example) an 87. (Compared to, say Oban 14 which gets 79 or Bruichladdich 15 yo at 80, or Bowmore Dawn at 83).

So I broke down and got a bottle of the doublewood at TJ's for $32. Well, as one would expect, it is a lot like the Glenmorangie special finish jobs. It is very nice, but I have to agree with y'all that it is not quite as nice as the G'morangies. There is a little less nuttiness and spice and rather more orangieness (as Jackson says).

IN case any of you have some lying around, I found that it improves with water. I now do most scotches neat or almost so, some need about 1/4 water, this one needs 1/2 water to smooth out the texture and integrate the citrusy elements.

My problems with the Balvenie's I've had is that they are all so hot, sharp, and spirity tasting. When I added enough water to smooth them out, they were too diluted. Glenmorangie 15 and 18 are both much better than any of the Balvenie's I've tried.
