PC based music is the way to go.. have done it for years now, network streaming from a QNAP NAS to my Linn Akurate DS (network player). It was WAY better than CD, and has changed the way I listen to music.

The QNAP Silent NAS seems interesting. With SSD disks I guess it will be pretty silent so you could place it wherever you want.. (mine is not silent and has to be in a another room).

Don't think it will work directly with the Hugo, but you could always stream from the NAS to a computer/laptop/iDevice/whatever and from that device connect to the Hugo.

PlugPlayer seems to not down sampling high res flac files, so if that is so you could stream directly from your NAS to a iDevice and then play it directly on your Hugo. And you could upload flac files from the NAS on to the iDevice and play on the go.

Lots of possibilities..

My wallet is hoping for that to be true.. :)

And I must say.. they way they have been introducing the Hugo in the market.. it just appeals to me.. they could not be selling me a product in a better way.

They are VERY enthusiastic about this little fellow, and I really believe them (I wan't to anyway..) :D

Now I just have to wait.............

I'v ebeen trying to get my local dealer to confirm to me when they'll have the Hugo but still they don't return my calls. I see people are pre-ordering it now; that seems like the best idea but I'm not sure I want to do it through my dealer now. I wonder if Chord will take an order from me directly?

I'll be saying more about it for sure. The Hugo was one of the coolest Head-Fi-specific products of CES 2014 for me.

LOL. I listen to just about everything (though I haven't been able to get into Tuvan throat singing).

The straps came with the Hugo, and fit perfectly into grooves cut into the chassis. There are a set of three of these grooves on each side of the Hugo, and it came with six of these straps, so I'm assuming they were made for the grooves. I don't recall the instructions specifically mentioning them, though.

No app needed. I just paired it to the iPod Touch with standard Bluetooth pairing, and, voila. While my iPod Touch and iPhone 5S don't support aptX (which the Hugo does), I believe my Galaxy S4 does (which I have yet to pair with the Hugo), as well as my MacBook Airs, so I'll play via aptX with those very soon.

So far, my only criticism of the Hugo regards its recessed jacks. It has two 3.5mm headphone jacks, and one 1/4" headphone jack. The two mini jacks are recessed, which hasn't presented a problem yet, but I suspect I've got some headphones with plugs here that will be too big. Thankfully, the 1/4" jack isn't recessed. Other recessed jacks include the Toslink input, the three RCA jacks (stereo outputs and coaxial digital input), and the two micro USB inputs (and some of my micro USB cables will not fit through to the recessed jacks, but Chord does include one that does). I get the impression (and this is just my guess) that perhaps Chord had the PCB(s) in final form, but maybe chose to extend the chassis to fit the length of the iPhone 5/5s--again, just a guess--leading to the recessed jacks.

Other than that so far, the Hugo has been an absolute thrill to listen to and use, and Chord regards it their current best DAC, portable or otherwise (though I imagine they'd therefore be updating their desktop flagship DAC soon).

I had vacation time before and after CES, so I'm a bit late getting back into gear here. I haven't yet had the time to do direct comparisons with other DAC/amp combos, but I'm certainly eager to do that, as the Hugo has, again, so far been immensely impressive.

I'm waiting to see if the Hugo's DAC performance matches (or exceeds) the QuteEX. That would make this a great home/desktop DAC solution with built in portable capability and headphone amp. I can dream right?

D****it head fi. I was thinking "maybe I don't need to go that high level" but now only thing in my mind is, get a nice transport dap (nice capacity, fluid ui) and start saving for Chord to pair with your SE5way. That's it, I will be getting those 2 and deactivate my head fi account (suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure, of coooouuuuurseeee).

I think the dap will be FiiO X5, for 350 bucks, 2 micro sd slots + USB OTG feature to add more capacity (for example with meenova, you can add another micro sd, it means 3 in total). Imagine if next generation micro sd cards (128gb) will be compatible with the current devices. I will be settled for a loooong time.

Anyone has any insider info on which headphone or c/iem Chord used to tune this DAC/Amp? I have seen some mentions how well it pairs with HD800 which made me drools uncontrollably....

I have succumbed to the inevitable: Hugo has been ordered! Got to say that I'm really excited about this device. I'm hoping someone (Jude perhaps?) will be kind enough to post some impressions (anything :-) as like others here I'm very keen to be reassured that I've done the right thing!

Can someone help a noob out by describing briefly what is the sound signature of Chord products in general? I have zero experience with Chord products. Many thanks.

Ohh.. jummy!

Quite a positive review.. and I have seen the same other places.. product of the year award and such, and also two years in a row.

I guess that this little fellow is quite good, and when Chord says that Hugo has the best DAC they ever made.. I guess that the Hugo is quite ok.. ;)

I am in the same boat as you.. never heard Chord, but from what I have read in the latest reviews they are making neutral products, as to get as close as possible to extract exactly what has been recorded.

From the review above the sense of depth and air is mentioned as well as crystal clear, precise and not harsh (among other things).

I hope that the sound stage is huge also.. and I have covered all my bases.. and especially when they say that the Hugo is better..

And by the way.. Jude said that the Hugo was "immensely impressive".. and that should count for something? ;)

I can't wait..

Congrats! I have done the same thing as you.. and now I'm looking for evidence that I am not an idiot! ;)

I guess that you have seen Jude's first impressions, but for those who has not (around the middle of the page):

My dealer has placed the order with Chord, and is now waiting for the order confirmation and an approximately delivery date..

Arghh.. this waiting is killing me!

Yes, I saw Jude's comments ;-). I'm looking forward to further views from him on Hugo's performance.
I spoke to Chord again yesterday (they're very friendly and quite willing to talk about their new product) and asked when we might expect to see more information for Hugo on their website. He said it should be soon but he'd see what he could do to hurry things up.
Then I called my dealer to place the order and he said he'd just received the press release for Hugo from Chord. I asked if he could share that with me (he said it had a lot of technical detail). He said he'd try but it was a pdf with trade prices included which of course he'd have to remove somehow.

HUGO is very exciting... now we need a Mini-battery operated-Music server !

Indeed, there is NO real perfect source for it:  We need a DAP with BIG Storage, Best UI, but WITHOUT DAP/AMP.   Some sort of portable nano-Aurender. :D

Too bad that this does not exist.

--> I dream of a mini thick tablet that will have 512 Gb SSD/NAD on board, a glorious (iTune or Aurender-iPAD like) interface, and  ToskLink/Coax  Digital out. And...  with the same form factor than the HUGO so that it can stack  on top of HUGO perfectly.

M. CHORD, think about it pleassssee !
