OK so which one of those options would technically be better to amp the HD 558 ?

Alright so i bought the HD 558 recently and now im at the point where i'd like to buy an amp or sound card to get the best out of them. I currently own a Xi-Fi Titanium (non HD) and iM considering two options :

- Upgrading to a Soundblaster Z as suggested by a member here

or

- Buy a Fiio E11 and plug it into the Titanium line out

I game , listen to music and watch movies with that setup so i was wondering which would do a better job at it ? Im pretty satisfied with my Titanium functions as a whole but i would like a bit more power behind the 558. The Fiio would take care of that but so would the Z with it's dedicated amp so i'm a bit torn and confused.

So all in all it's Titanium non HD + Fiio E11 vs Soundblaster Z

I can get the Fiio E11 for 75$ tax + shipping included
The SBZ is 85$ for the OEM version. Around 100$ with taxes plus shipping included

Also , is getting the retail version of the SBZ with the EMI shield worth it ?

Thanks in advance for any input

Audio quality would be better to just keep the Titanium-HD and get an external headphone amplifier.

(hopefully you disabled the motherboard's on-board audio, in the BIOS)

Schiit Magni or O2 (Objective 2) would be great, but the FiiO E11 can easily drive the HD558s

The Titanium-HD comes with better audio quality (hardware) then the SB-Z & Zx

And the Magni, O2 and E11 are better headphone amplifiers, then the ones built into the SB-Z or SB-Zx

Did you remove the black rubber tape from inside the cups of the HD558?

Hi,

You should also consider Fiio E10 Dac/Amp.

Best Luck!

It's not the HD. It's the "vanilla" Xi-Fi Titanium without the EMI shield , RCA connector and headphone amp.

And that's why i ask because i've read on another site that even the vanilla Titanium has better hardware then the Z. However the Z posses more bells and whistles , including the headphone amp which is the main reason i'm interested in the card as the Titanium doesn't have it. On the other hand i've read on hard forum that going from a vanilla Titanium to a Z is a marginal upgrade at best or even a downgrade as surround is apparently better on the X--Fi. Which in turn is why im considering an external amp instead.

I looked at the Schiit and O2 but those are out of my price range for now coming out of the holidays. I'm thnking about spending 100$ at most which is why the E11 is interesting since i can get it for 75$. I'm in Canada mind you so uts a decent price for it

And no i havent modded my 558 yet as i'd rather wait for the burn in period to be done with before. Out of the box i like how it sounds but i will eventually try the mod and see how it goes. Not in hurry nor a priority though

It is an option for sure but i don't really need a DAC-Amp combo right now and the E10 is 120$ here so i'm not sure if it's really worth it over the Soundblaster Z or E11 for what i intend to do.

If i wanted to go that route i'd bite the bullet and go straight for the E17 instead. I may very well in the future but right now i just want something sub 100$ to drive the 558 a lil better than the line out of the Xi-Fi Titanium
