And lard_tris and krunchylex (Jason and Alex) managed to take part in the tours and we had both in house and plugged into the Mjolnir. Nice by almost every measure, but so expensive! Coming from a perspective that occasionally wonders if a $1400 HD 800 is worth it…but really wants a $2600 amp (Stratus).

In the meantime, I do nothing and save my money.

Makes me feel a little bit better about wanting a $1400 amp...

You should go Eddie Current and get the 2A3 Mk2 or Mk4 instead :P

Is there anyone in the Columbus area with an amp using 6AS7-type power tubes? Even though I won't get my amp until later this summer, I have gone on a bit of a tube-buying spree and just realized (duh! lol) that when they arrive, I have no way to determine whether or not they are defective. So it would be a huge relief if I could try them out to make sure that they light up and play.

In short order, I expect to have pairs of RCA 6AS7G, Tung-Sol 6080, Tung-Sol/Chatham 5998 and Cetron 6336B.

Thanks! :)

Has anyone shown up at a meet with a pair of Philips Fidelio X1s?  I would like to give those a listen sometime.  Also, FWIW at Guitar Center they have the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO, 80 ohms you can try out.  They're in the box, but they let me open em up.  I didn't plan going in there so was only able to test them with my phone and a few songs from it.  Seemed to be the best set they had there.

Anyone know of any other places in the area where you can demo decent headphones?

Hanson Audio in Dayton has the full Audeze line, a bunch of Grados, the Sennheiser HD800s, 650s, and 598s, as well as some others. I don't recall some of the others since I was focusing completely on the Audezes. The guys there were very friendly but a bit upset when I walked out without buying anything. Oh well, I'm sure part of it is them trying to guilt you into a $1,000+ purchase. They are open on Saturdays, though, which is a very nice plus for working folks.

There's also SoundEarphones in Cincinnati. I haven't been there yet, though, since they're only open during normal business hours on weekdays - and won't open up on weekends even if you ask nicely.

Not good enough, doesn't cost enough.

Please see post #133.

I LOL'd at all that.

So DVass, no chance with all those Audezes? 2, 3, X, XC?

No chance with the LCD-2s... although you can pick up a new pair for under $800 if you talk to the right person. But I actually preferred the sound of the LCD-Xs. They sounded amazing paired with the Bryston BHA-1. So we'll see what the future has in store.

I read through the thread earlier but didn't remember or realize they are the same pair that was "ruined."  Oops, hehe.  I just thought it was cool there was some decent headphones available to try out in person.  Also Sam Ash down the street had Shure 840s, but I wasn't impressed.

Thanks.  Will have to check out Hanson next time I head out that way.

It wasn't just with the 770s, to my ears anyways. Seems I was the only one that heard a certain glaring flaw, until I shared.
So what was that certain glaring flaw? And you're saying it applies to the whole Beyerdynamic line?

Glare on voices in a certain range.  Sibilant, I suppose, but that's not quite it.  And once you hear it, it won't go away.  Like getting hit in the eyes by the sunshine for a second when you're not expecting it.

Edit: it's like, on the Hhhhhhh and not the Ssssss sounds.

All the Beyers?  No idea.

Gotcha.  Ya, probably ignorance is bliss then.  Not exactly the same thing, but reminds me of how on Led Zeppelin's The Ocean, you can hear John Bonham's squeaky drum pedal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpC4C95SQ5k

Can hear it in other spots too and in other tracks, but definitely at :15 and :20.  Cannot unhear.
