Mid range closed can recommendations

Let me start by saying I like the sound signature oh my HD 428's (Sennheiser). The only thing I don't care for is the cheap plasticy feeling they have. I'd like to get a pair of cans that feel....more substantial. I'd prefer for them to have the same sort of sound signature as the 428's, prefer closed (but I would entertain open backs if the sounded right), and must run off of iDevices without an amp. Not interested in running an amp. Budget is $100-200 max.
Thanks

If my HD439 is any indication for Sennheiser's HD4xx series's general sound signature, I really do not think there is any closed one sounding similar to yours.

Sennheiser HD558 is the best bet, which is open-aire, but it is indeed substantial upgrade from HD428 and still can be played from your iDevices without much trouble.

Only problem with HD558 is that the cable is 1/4 inch instead of 1/8, and the adapter included is really, really bad and it will (NOT might) break your iDevices' headphone jack due to force. You probably want to either grab flexible 1/8 adapter like this (example: http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Adapter-Female-6-3mm-3-5mm/dp/B008JGWY2Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388708794&sr=8-1 ) or just grab a replacement cable from ebay like this (example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/261280639444?lpid=82 )

How do they sound? What sound signature?

Not sure i can define it properly, but I would say clean but not overbearing highs, solid mids, and tight bass. I like a little bit of "punch" in the bass.

Is anything but the bass emphasized or recessed.

No, I would say that to my non distinguished ear they are very well balanced.

The ATH A900x would be my top recommendation. Basically an open headphone with good bass extension and punchy bass.
