Looking for an open upgrade to my current cans for a wide range of music

Currently I have the ATH-m50's for use with my Kenwood receiver and occasionally my ipod. I have been looking for an upgrade for a while now. I listen to a very wide range of music such as hip hop, jazz, classic rock, folk, and electronic. I also have a jdslabs o2 amplifier for use with the headphones. I am leaning towards the akg q701's since my friend offered them to me for very cheap. Can I power these cans with my current equipment and if not what is an alternative with relatively similar sound signature? Also, I am looking for an open back set of headphones for sure.

Price range? Q701 needs an amp, and its not good at hip hop or electronic.

O2 amplifier will have no problem driving Q701... but did you hear them? The sound signature of Q701 is quite different from M50.

Yes, I have heard them and enjoy the sound. I do not care about them being similar in any way to the m50's. I am looking at about a $200-$300 price range. I have heard though that the q701's are very difficult to amp. I am surprised you say my o2 can power them.

Q701 is a bit more difficult to amp than its peer headphones, but just a bit. It's not a monster. When I had the Q701, a two-battery CMOY powered it fine. The O2 has way more than enough power. If you have a Kenwood receiver, you are probably good to go. I also used a Sony receiver with my Q701s. I had to turn the volume up fairly high, but it was fine.
