Upgrade from MDR-V6

Hi guys. I've been a professional lurker here for years. Just about 2 years ago I bought my first pair of decent headphones, the Sony MDR-V6. I still have them and I love them, and learnt more about what I want in a pair of headphones since I got them but I still have much to learn.

I recently got a Fiio E07k and I love how different my headphones sound with it, however, I'm wondering which headphones and what price range should I be looking at as a step-up from the MDR-V6 for a beginner to higher quality audio like myself. Something that will be obviously better sounding that what I have. Closed-back, over the ear headphones. I've heard of headphones like the HD-280, the Shure 440 and others but I don't know how much of an increase in sound quality there is from the Sony.

Thanks for your help!

Budget?

A cheap way to improve the comfort of the MDR-V6s

is the Beyerdynamic EDT 200/250/280 Velour ear pads, $23.

Don't have a budget in mind, ~$150 maybe? I actually do have the ear pads. Original ones wore out.

My experience with beyer pads is that the low-mids will sound too distant (that is already recessed on stock pads) and bit too much boom on bass region.

If you want the practicality, durability, portability and lightness of the V6 with sound geared more for "audiophiles"... check these out

TheBoss,

Thanks for the suggestion, I never heard of the Senal SMH-1000s before, however, I'm wary of them. Firstly, I wish there was a bit more info out there on them. More importantly, all evidence seems to suggest that sonically they're too similar to the 7506 to be worth it for me to buy, and definitely doesn't seem to be the clear step-up in quality that I'm looking for.

Thanks again.
