My dream sound system includes the following components:
*JPS Labs Abyss AB-1266 planar magnetic headphones
*Data Conversion Systems dCS Vivaldi Digital Playback System (transport, DAC, upsampler, clock)
*Woo Audio WA-234 MONO monoblock amplifier
*Light Harmonic Da Vinci Source music server
*PS Audio PerfectWave P10 Power Plant
*quality cables, equipment racks, private listening room, security system, etc., etc.
However, I have yet to decide what my ideal portable setup would be for the Abyss headphones.
I will most likely get the HiFiMAN HM-901 digital audio player with the Balanced Amplifier Module.
Unfortunately, it only has a 3.5mm headphone jack, forcing the use of an adapter, which could inhibit mobility somewhat and potentially create other problems.
On top of that, the JPS cables and adapters are custom made...
"Dual balanced 8 FT (2.5 meter) XLR cable set, and both 1/4" (6.3 mm) and 4 pin XLR cable Y-adaptors, custom made by JPS Labs for Abyss."
...so I am uncertain about pairing any old 6.3mm to 3.5mm adapter with them.
Aside from that minor annoyance, I'm thinking that I could use just these two pieces of equipment (with whatever cables and adapters are needed) and be set for a convenient (if not ideal) portable audiophile setup.
I know that a dedicated amp and DAC could be added to the equation, but that would make it less portable - and from what I have heard, the HM-901's built-in balanced amp and dual DAC cards are exceptional to begin with.
Despite how power-hungry the AB-1266 is, I believe the upgraded amplifier card should be sufficient to drive it for portable use. (Correct me if I'm mistaken.)
If you have ideas for improvement or would like to share details of your own system (whether actualized or imagined), I'd love to hear about it!
