Assistance choosing open phones AD900X/DT880/990/Q701/MA900 - Page 2

PurpleAngle should probably clarify, as I don't know much about soundcards, but I think the Xonar DG has a headphone amp inside it. Now, IDK how it would compare to the E10.

It's OK, the Xonar DG has no relevance in this thread. My budget is $200, not $20.

Would love to hear any other suggestions regarding a DAC+Amp combo that will suit the DT880\Q701

As your over all audio budget appears to be around $400-$450.

Asus Xonar DX or D1 sound card, used $60

The DX & D1 come with the CS4398 DAC chip :) and Dolby Headphone 7.1 surround sound

Schiit Magni headphone amplifier, $99.

So total around $160 (+shipping and tax), so maybe $180.

Which would leave you with around $220 to $270 for headphones.

Ok thanks.

Anyone else got some other recommendations?

Again- need a $200 Amp+DAC for DT880 Pro 250 Ohm or the Q701.

I've had the K702 and currently have a DT880. For movies, it'd probably depend on what you want. The DT880 definitely has more bass, but I preferred the midrange of the Q701. The same for music, except they both have some issues. I hated the upper mid peak in my K702, but I also wish there were more mids/less treble on my DT880. If you're coming from an AD700, the DT880 might not satisfy your soundstage desires, but they're decent at it.

Oh, and I hated the O2 with my K702, but then I didn't like it much with any of my other headphones as well, most particularly my SA5000, which was an even worse pairing. If space isn't an issue, I'd definitely look at a vintage receiver. My Harman Kardon HK430 cost me around $50 and sounds almost as good as my $400+ Audio-GD SA-31 (which makes me really sad in retrospect) and has power to spare.

If you get the chance, I would suggest trying out the two headphones that you are considering. I have heard the Q701s and for film scores and dynamic effects they are unsurpassed in this price range. If you want a more honest, detailed sound for music, thats where the DT880s would do you good. I have a set of Beyerdynamic T90s (250ohm) and I use them with a HiFiMAN EF2A amp for my computer which can drive them adequately. Whats your price rage for amps? I can give you some suggestions off of your budget!

My budget for both the DAC and the Amplifier is $200.

Thanks

Ok then I would definitely look at the Aune T1/X1, HiFiMAN EF2A, Schiit magni/modi, NUForce ICON udac2, and Fiio Mont Blanc.
