Upgrade from sony MDR xb500?

Thread Starter

so ive had my pair of xb500's for around 2 years now, and i love them, but i feel it is time for an upgrade. i am looking for a pair of headphones with substantial bass but overall better quality in all aspects of sound reproduction, more concerned with quality than quantity, as seems to be the case with the xb500's. i have considered the beyerdynamic dt770 pro and the audio-technica PRO700MK2. however it sounds like i would need an amp to truly realise the potential of the beyerdynamics when i would idealy still like to have the headphones ready for portable use (i suppose a small portable amp is an option there... but still a hassle and additional cost. otherwise my source would just be a phone or laptop). Whilst the PRO700's look like a great headphone, they are apparently uncomfortable without modifications (i do plan on using these for several hours at a time). cost isnt really a barrier, but preferably under $300.

thanks for the help and opinions in advance :)

V-moda m-100 on this one. It still has the bass profile that you want, but has substantial quality over the xb500. the dt770 pro are fantastics, but as you said they need an amp to bring out it's true potential. also look at the beyerdynamic custom one's. I don't know if they are amp needy like the dt770, but they will definitely meet your sound preference needs. I would look into getting the vmoda m-100 for a price cheaper than $300 or do some research on the custom one's to see if they don't really need an amp ast they are cheaper than the m-100

I'd go for the WS99 over the M100 or DT770.
