yeah, i didn't think that the m50's were overly bassy at all (maybe im just inexperienced). and yeah, i was unsure of which amp to get, but i figured, the more expensive the better. if there really isnt much of a difference then i may just get the e6 and save some cash for future endeavors (maybe one of ibasso or the fiio x3)

Or an inexpensive tube amp. Not really portable but it's a tube amp!

Guitar Center usually has medium to highish end headphones you can try.

luckily i have a GC in my area, i'll have to make trip there. right now at the top of m list are the akg k550's and the beyerdynamic d770's. leaning towards the k550's though, just because of looks, and people say it's more of a flat response, which seems like it would be better oveall for all my music...any other suggestions besides those two?

Look at the DT660s. They're a flatter response than the 770s as well.
