Good addition Steve Gadd. He's the session drummer on the Steely Dan Aja album, and on the title track is incredible!!!

Glenn Kotche is an amazing drummer and percussionist, who does wonders with whatever is thrown at him, be it crazy improv stuff or the Wilco mainstream stuff. A real musician through and through. He's very articulate and intelligent as well.

Check him out.

I feel Tony Williams should get a mention here. Being a great drummer is not only about what you can do on the drums, it's your ability to complement other musicians' playing. Listen to Tony's ultra responsive playing from this 1964 love recording of So What with Miles Davis. What playing and absolutely razor edged hi-hat grooving. He was either 18 or 19 on this record.

Since we seem to have successfully managed to pull this thread over to jazz drummers (in spite of the kicking and screaming :)) here are few other jazz greats worth mentioning:

The one and only Art Blakey

Ed Blackwell, Billy Higgins, Herlin Riley, Hamid Drake, Famoudou Don Moye (the master of Sun percussion), Dannie Richmond, Andrew Cyrille and many, many, many others all masters of the art of drumming.

And how could I forget the great Dutch drummer Han Bennink.

Yes. A lot of really great names there. My older brother got me into jazz. He is a bass player( myself a drummer ) and played with Charlie Mingus and a few other greats. He even used to tutor Carlie's son Eric for a while.

Well, here's a naughty boy for you all.  This is beyond technique, it's character, humour, showmanship.  How many drummers have become this good?
