Need Help Choosing New Headphones For Gaming And General Music + What DAC To Buy For It?

Hi everyone, first post on the website and I'm already asking for help!

Just wanted some peoples opinions on a few pairs of headphones, and what DAC to buy for them. The headphones will be mainly used for listening to liquid D&B (nothing too crazy), and some Hip-Hop, despite these two genres of music I am not after a pair of headphones with overpowering bass.

I would like a pair of headphones with a very good soundstage, so open back would probably be best, I may also use these for gaming in the future (if that is of any help). I would honestly like to spend no more than £150 on the headphones and around the same on a DAC, although I am able to have some movement on the price.

The first pair I had in mind, are the 'Sennheiser HD 558'. I have looked into these headphones and have found many good reviews, from what I have read they seem to be very comfortable headphones with a balanced overall sound and also have a wide sound stage. Is there a better alternative? What is your opinion on this pair?

The second pair I have looked at are the 'Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro', I have also heard many good things about these headphones. But One concern is the bass, I have heard it can be overpowering and can be quite fatiguing on the ears? What is your opinion on these? Are they better than the HD 558?

If you have any suggestions of headphones that you think would be suitable then feel free to make a suggestion, any input is much appreciated!

The DAC I had in mind was the 'HRT MicroStreamer', I have read many good reviews on this product and I was wondering would it be a good combination with either pair of headphones? Do you have a recommendation?

As I have said above any input is highly appreciated! Also please understand that I am no expert so you will have to excuse any lack of knowledge on my behalf. Look forward to hearing from some of you,

I haven't got any specific advice for you, but I just wanted to post my admiration for your good judgement on not jumping immediately to the typical bass-boomer 'phones that so many new members ask about. Another head-fier and I were chatting recently about this, and we both agreed that we wished more new head-fi seekers realized that they are much better off with a more balanced and high quality headphone for their first real purchase. Doing so will give you a great baseline that will *then* let you say "In my next purchase I would like more bass" or "In my next purchase I would like a smoother, more defined sound with more clarity but no grating harshness." Kudos! smily_headphones1.gif

Thank you man, I think I have this preference due to owning or at least trying a few pairs of 'bass' headphones. Fairly quickly I grew tired of the sound that they produced and I am hoping to find something a easier to listen to for longer periods in the future. Thanks for the reply!

I'll recommend you the sony ma900! Then, get a sound card for better sound quality and virtual surround (good for gaming). Look into mad lust envys gaming thread as well.
