The Astell & Kern AK240 - Page 52

AK240 is way too pricey.

Instead I could choose AK120. Is it really worth it compared to AK100 MkII ?

The best thing to do is to find somewhere where you can listen to both players and see if the difference is enough for you to justify the extra.

I know. Currently have to listen to a dozen of units, as I revamp my system.

Difficult where I live. Only way would be to Amazon it,  and return it if not convenient. I would do that.

Ahh, that is tough then. From what I have read the main difference is slightly more refinement and musicality (120vs100)

Please check post #694

There may still be a chance as explained by Vinnie, an expert in AK product.

We will have to wait for AK to explain or Vinnie to pop under hood to confirm

Read a few so called reviews of the features.  One said 256gb internal and one micro slot for a 128gb card.

It also said the 120 uses one Wolfson 8740. I hope Anak or someone like himself, can review this quickly.

AnakChan sold his AK120. Also the AK120 uses 2 wolfson DACs

Someone would have to be generous enough to loan me their AK240 for me to compare. I don't have the funds to buy the AK240 for review...well I do but not exactly my top priority ;-).

I liked the AK120 over the Sony when I tried both while in Tokyo. I like the slightly more mellow sound signature. I know Anakchan feels the opposite.

What is sick for me, is that I like the looks. It is really different and seems like it should fit into deep space somewhere. I just wish they had used different dacs but who knows. I look forward to the reviews. The price though, would love to see one in person.

Funny thing is that I have grown to like the look... And probably becos i think about this dap too much...

I will wait for reviews

:beerchug: I really like my AK120........I am starting to feel this stirring inside and I think I will get the 240. I might wait for the 2nd or 3rd  week after it is available, just to make sure the UI is not buggy. I wonder why they went away from Wolfson? Anyone have insights or info about that?

From what I understand the Wolfson DAC that is DSD capable isn't designed for portable usage. It's what the RWAK B mods use and people say they lose about 2 hours of battery life from stock 120s. Having 2 in the AK 240 would create a serious issue with battery life so the Cirius Logic DSD capable offering made more sense for portable use.

Of course if they used the 2 Wolfson's then the battery life would be crap, so they'd need a bigger battery, which would make the device bulkier. No matter what they'd be doing something that someone didn't like.

Whether I get this one or not depends on how they implement the line out feature. I spend 3 weeks a month away from home so I place a higher priority on portable DAP's than most people do, but what will really justify the extra cost for me is once I'm done in the field in a few years, will I be able to build a home setup around this.

So for something that is meant to be about the best sound they could have gotten rid of the useless large screen and used the real estate for a bigger battery and kept the Wolfsons. I would have happily traded even the screen on my 120 for better performance, after all, do we really need full colour images, I know my screens stays on a few seconds then goes out as I have set it up so.

+1  A small touch screen for better features and sound makes sense to me.
