That would just make the case of increasing competition even stronger...Okay let's wait and see what new DAPs 2014 will offer.

The AK120 doesn't do it for me -  just didn't wow me (sorry folks) had my hopes on the AK240. Anyone has more info vs. the AK120 can't wait to hear it.

I dropped by the iRiver room at CES today. I have to admit when I saw the photos posted of the AK240 I was really really puzzled by it, it looked like some kind of Klingon weapon with all the sharp edges. The odd angled edge was also a put off. However in person it is pretty sweet, fits well in my hand also the fit and finish drip high end, very polished and ergonomically fit. Sounded really good, I am so happy to see a line out function built into the device. The UI is different from their other players and I found it easy to navigate. nice work iRiver.

Here are a few iPhone shots...

Why would you plug the AK240 into something else, isn't it supposed to be a one stop no need to buy cables or headphone amp device..or am I missing something?

at $ 2400 you should NOT need an additional AMP !??

Reminds me of the BMW M5 where you had to pay extra for some extra M goodies. For God's sake, it's the top of the line so why does it need any further assistance.

The thing is I already have a algorhythm solo dac and mk3 b..why would I want to add to the bulk of that big bulging block.. isn't that supposed to be the point of it..a more portable rig(that sounds as good or better)than having a dac headphone amp and phone strapped together?

you can see the AK240 is not that thick when stacking on top of the ALO amp. The photo on AK website makes it look very thick

the photos are posted by ALO, so you will see their interconnect.

and we all have definitions of "need"

I imagine Ken was testing the built-in amp against one he was familiar with and/or testing the DAC part alone. That is what most of us do at the shows: Bring our own gear and, allowing for what we can, give everything a quick go with as familiar set-ups as possible. A familiar amp and a pair of IEMs and a micro-SD card full of music is handy for this.

And he just happened to have (by chance) some ALO cables on hand to put it to the test..what I would have done is compared it to my algorhythm solo dac and alo mk3b to see if it's worth splashing the cash or just keeping what I already have!

IF i get one, i will really change this tiny-fragile 2,5 mm Balanced plug for a Mini-XLK (I hope there will be room inside for this mod).  I really can't imagine a Thick cable from a full size headphone terminated by a 2,5 mm plug. The effort on the 2,5 female jack will create false contacts within few weeks...

Hmmm... talk about piggy-backing the publicity of the AK240 for ALO's own purposes..!

It's all low voltage. The only difference between a line out and headphone out is a V control that's bypassed here and a line out doesn't need to be low z but low z is always good. It's all up to execution. There is no inherent drawback in this application. "sounded really good" from a critical listener would indicate to me that it works well.

Ken is from ALO, an amplifier manufacturer. Of course he's going to check the line out feature with his own amp. There is no implication of 'need' here.

ALO make some of the best portable headphone amps..not slagging them off or anything, it's just the only reason I would be getting the AK240 is because it's a more portable version of the ALO and cypher labs gear.. I bought a ray samuels portable headphone amp once to drive my hifiman he6 headphones and gave it to my girlfriend with the headphones..the ALO amp sounded way better..i don't want to buy something for $2400 with a headphone amp not as good sounding as the mk3b!

Well no. 1 Ken is from ALO and 2 martin was just talking about the gear he had. Coincidence it was all ALO.
