I just find it hard to believe Drew would overcharge. He has a great reputation for being fair on pricing. I got my 120 from TTVJ so will wait and see what the actual price is but seeing as it seems elsewhere in Europe and the UK their prices equate to the $3200 figure who knows.

I must admit though I am a fan of the brand it is leaving a bit of a bad taste in my mouth that on their FB page the other players are now an after thought to the 240.

23.30 ish and I was casually looking at the Amazon UK site (as one does before bed) - they are stocking the AK240 and had 1 left. I hesitated for about 10 minutes, (to have a think and to lie to my Misses about the price). It was gone. Aghhhhhh!.

Then I got up at 03.30 the next day/night . I was drawn. It was there again and I pressed the button. Yippee. It all feels good. It feels really good. When will the guilt set in?

ps. luckily, I have the money so no credit card - that's my excuse at the moment.

Might be run over by a bus. That's an other excuse.

What happens if I'm run over by a bus after I get my AK240? Will it create an 'aura' around me?

As you can tell, I'm brain numbingly happy.

Will report back impressions in a more 'business like' manner.

Astell and Kern are going to be offering it on Amazon UK with a 10% discount but only if you've registered at the Bristol Hifi show.

They would sent you a link via email for the discount to apply.

Today while at the Bristol Hifi show I had a listen to the AK240 using my Roxanne via balanced and unbalanced cable.

My small impression

Before I start I have to say I'm no audiophile. I do love nice quality music and can tell the difference between a rubbish sounding set and a really good sounding set.

The AK240 looks amazing compared to my AK120. It feels very expensive and the screen and GUI are so much better than the AK120.

.

Now for the sound.

The AK240 sounded warmer, the sound stage was wider. I played the same music on both DAP. The bass was fuller on the 240 than the 120 but when I used my Vortuze amp on the 120 the bass did match the 240.

Playing DSD tracks is where the 240 beat the 120 by a fair margin.

I also couldn't tell any difference between the balanced cable and unbalanced cable for my Roxanne.

For people thinking of either buying the AK120 or the AK240 new I would say go for the AK240 if you can afford it or just get the AK120 with a good external amp.

Thanks

Any idea where I can get a balanced cable for Roxanne's proprietary connector?

The cable was specially made for Astell and Kern for the Roxanne universal they had for demo only. It's not available yet.

Ah, for a moment, I was excited and then brought down to earth again. :-(

But thanks for the info.

Amazon UK gave me, and others presumably from now on, about 7% discount with no prior registration or connection to anything (although the price DROPPED between me seeing it first in the evening prior to pressing the button by an extra £100 or so by the next morning). WHAT!!! I nearly didn't thinking . . . maybe . . .

So you get another 3% £66 if you travel to Bristol and take in the show. Be careful - if that sort of money worries you then don't buy the AK240. Buyers should be prepared for a big loss on resale of the % compared to a performance car. Personally I've justified it in my Audio Nutcase mind as 'The One' that will keep me happy for many years (lol).

My strategy is to send it back within the normal 1 month return period if the price plummets. Because who knows? It all seems very odd at the moment.

BTW Amazon UK out of stock and now quoting 1 to 2 month wait. Maybe the price will settle at 90% of RRP. At that level I'm still very happy with my purchase - I'd be less so if I'd paid RRP. Mine arrives tomorrow, Monday before 13.00.

Not likely a new cable since it's permanently attached to the earpieces (boo Sennheiser). But, there is no need to replace the entire cable. Get balanced easily by swapping stock plug with a balanced plug (4 pole 2.5mm). Easily done by competent solder Jockey.

The price does not worry me at all. I'ts just for people that went to the show. I'm getting mine from the states when I travel in 3 weeks time.

Just hoping its worth it as I really still love my AK120

Cheers burtomr. Know about the cable bits and pieces (I've got IE800) but had no idea about the swapping of plugs. Cheers again.

daseinpdx has mentioned in the impression thread that ALO will be putting out a balanced cable for IE800. Someone has also posted a picture of its prototype in this thread before:

Amazon UK prices.

Yesterday I bought at 7% discount (low stock [1] available for next day delivery). This morning discount offered is 8% but for 1-2 months delivery.

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but has anyone else had problems downloading the MQS software for MAC

from the iriver web site.

Just seems to go to an invalid link for me.
