HiFiGuy528, since you seems to have insider infos, can you tell us if the AK240 integrate a TRUE line-out, with power amp and volume control totally & physically bypassed (some sort of relay) or is it is just the Headphone out with volume set to max by software ?

Thanks for that. I thought when I saw it that they would. After all, they include one with the 120 at half the price.

Gotta be the guy to say it... But after testing an AK10 with an iPod Touch 5g, I have to ask... Is there some sort of empirical data that suggests that Astell & Kern's sound is in fact superior to that of an iPod Touch, or even an iPhone 5?

Just seems to me that might be a requirement now that we're looking at probably around $3000 or more for the AK240. It is almost a foregone conclusion that the iPhone 6 (and 6th gen Touch, if they make one) will handle true high-def sound, so I really think it will be imperative for A&K to prove that you are getting something for 3 grand.

My experience has been that the AK10's sound is a microscopically tiny improvement over the Touch 5g, in the mid-bass and vocals. And only on some songs. I'm keeping it only because I can't return it, and it's nice to be able to make hairline volume adjustments. But mostly because I can't return it. I imagine I'd be much happier with it if I was running one of the Android phones that doesn't have particularly great sound.

Hate to be a hater, but the AK240 is probably $3000, not $300. They need to PROVE something to ask that kind of money. Or we're just into Monster cable territory.

@Earbones, get a dap with a true/clean analog line out and a clean/transparent amp. With that, I guarantee that you will hear some big difference. I can't find one with a clean analog LO, so I DIY one for myself. I have tried many things unconventional and it has paid off, at least for me.

The only thing which prevents me from trying these hi-end daps is my satisfaction with what I am hearing. There are times I say to myself it can't be this good.

The AK10 takes over DAC duties, so seeing as how the analog line out will be bypassed, in what way will a DAP with a better analog out improve things? In less I'm misinterpreting your post. Which is very possible, ha ha.

I've found the iPods to be pretty terrific DAPs in general, particularly the 5g Touch... I know they're not audiophile sexy, and I always want to find something "better", but they do what they do better than most:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/apple/ipod-touch-5g/audio-quality.htm

As for an amp, I've paired the AK10 with a Fiio E11 and E12... Neither are stellar, obviously, but decent. I should note, that 95% of my experience with the AK10 thus far has been with IEMs, as that's mostly what I'm into...

I should also note that as I type this, I am finding the AK10 pull it's biggest lead over the Touch 5g sound yet, listening to KD Lang's "Drag" (terrific tester album, btw). I still don't think it's quite worth it's $299 price tag, and unless the AK240 is a MASSIVE improvement in sound, I'd be tempted to say it's price tag is going to be borderline offensive, ha

A clean line out takes the analog signals from dac directly to amp, nothing in between. I am not sure how the AK10 dac/amp is implemented tho.

Also you want to separate the power and keep it clean.

Waiting for comparisons between this and a RW balanced mod AK120 with 71b amplifier.

Have no doubt many reviewers will say its amazing but for something like this you really need to compare it yourself, is worse than watching someone review a high resolution display TV/Monitor online through your own monitor, going by another persons subjective experience and at times kinship with the company. I think the only person I can trust to be honest about this device and whether or not its an upgrade to what the 120 can do both modded and unmodded is Vinnie himself.

Guessing he'll be looking to tear the DAC's out and provide a Line out and hopefully do away with the mini jack.... in fact the mini jack is preventing me from considering it as an upgrade to a modded AK120, might have been a space issue internally or something but even if they had gone the Hifiman route and made a balanced cable attachment it would have been better.

Jude, thanks so much for all the detail. The point above is tantalizing: can you tell us more about what features the UI has? What about playlist support, ratings of songs and ability to dynamically play songs based upon criteria - basically, what elements other than search are there?

I'm sure the sound is great - it is in the 120 - but the buying decision to me will be based around usability given that I am not worried about sound quality.

Earbones, i have moded AK100, plus a handfull of DAPs including iTouch 4, iPhone 4, iPhone 5s, iPods 2 and 4, Colorlfy C3, Cowons S9, i9 and last but not least iBasso dx50.

to my ears moded AK100 smokes all of them sound wise. good earphones are a must and pay attention to music naturalness and fluidity. Cowons are good but i find them too closed and edgy sounding, iPods and iPhones sound bit mellow, less detailed and dark, they are pleasing to ear but not anywhere close to high end sound leave alone analogue or live sound. dx50 is nice but suffers from unpurified amp section, throw in external amp connected line out and this will thrive as well. But AK beats them all mate, them all... I repeat or so hear my ears.
