The Astell & Kern AK240 - Page 74

I think the adapter solution is the way to go. something not too thick will help not stress the small plug as well.

Sounds like it will compete for all in one best. That it's one piece pocket-able and to that sound level will assure it's sales. Not for everyone but then it wasn't meant to be. I do find it a bit humorous that it's constantly getting slammed for price by those that will never consider it. Just be happy it sounds good and move on if not for you. Probably what I'll do but I can still appreciate the overall excellent execution, just like their other units. Don't much care what something sounds like if I don't want to use it due to size or OS.

Im pretty close to my personal sonic nirvana with balanced hd700 out of sr71b with single ended LO from dx50. BUT if i can get a balanced LO from ak240 into the balanced input of sr71b I....well I cant even imagine how that will sound....

It's a shame they're counting up on model numbers. I was waiting for them to release the Astell & Kern AK47 so when i check in at airports, i can tell them I have a fully loaded AK47 in my carry-on bag and my suitcase is full of (bottlehead) crack and speedball.

AK240+SR71b,  balanced 100%, Should be a very exciting combo !

But... what remain to be tested is : Will the Balanced AMP inside the AK240 be GOOD ENOUGH (with easy to drive headphone or IEMs) not to need an external amp like the SR-71b ? It will be interesting to hear some A/B tests with and without the SR-71B (or any top of the line amp)?

Since I owe a TH-900 and have on order JH's Roxane IEMs, this question becomes important for me !

I'm fine with the Roxanne without AK120 without the SR-71B. It's easy to drive, so AK240 should be OK to drive it.

And so it begins.

Eke, no, it ends here, portable for 2.5k is nonsense for me personally, really i see no point unless AK240 can do impossible to bring depth and air flow feeling of good front end, which i doubt it can. As for home digital source i prefer full sized components to portable at any time. IMHO AK misses the whole point and steps into big high end territory so lets see if they are able to beat Chord and others. This is not portable game anymore. i might gladly take ak120 if Calyx will not sound as good, otherwise i will pick Calyx.

If it is significantly better than AK120, Calyx, DX-100, etc then there'll be enough takers, but for my money it would have to be pretty special to get me off my DX-100

Just remember with the Chord though it's a similar price you have to add in transport and cabling which is easily going to push it far north of A&K's one box solution in terms of cost so any extra (if any) sound quality has to be worth the extra. I can't say as I have yet to hear either, once April comes I will do just that as my local A&K dealer is just down the road from my local Chord dealer so though I won't be able to do back to back I should be able to get a fair idea of what they both can do

No, this is the beginning of the end for me. I can get decent used cars for 2500 euro. Even if the AK240 is significantly better than this generation of DAPs, which it simply isn't when you read between the lines of Jude's impressions (really no disrespect intended), the asking price is ridiculous. This era of $1k plus DAPs is already so stupid in my eyes. I don't know anyone here who would spend $1,000 on a smartphone. I can build a futureproof super PC for less than the AK240's price. Now Westone is coming out with their own $5,500 flagship headphone to compliment their new $1k iem.

Guys, please don't let this happen to our portable audio world. Thank God for Fiio.

Don't forget iBasso either. Also I think Sony's ZX1 is also priced normal, well still an expensive piece of device but it is worth its money I believe. Sony's pricing is not nightmare, that's what I am trying to say.

Of course, big kudos to FiiO, James and his team.
