1. Did FW updates fix the problem with the player cutting off the last few seconds of Flac playback?

2. Can this now be used as as a desktop DAC, plugged in via USB? And...

3. Handle DSD playback through my PC, bypassing my soundcard, using jRiver?

I guess I'm just trying to see where the model now stands as of today's date.

Thanks so much in advance!

1. Yes, they fixed it
2. Yes, you can use it as a USB DAC, but it has a 0.5 second delay so you won't have a good time watching movies
3. No idea.

It shouldn't have a problem driving the HD800s, but it would sound better through a desktop amp.

3 should be possible, since jriver likely converts DSD to PCM before sending the data to the DX90

Just out of curiosity...hmmm...I'm sure my HD800s could sound "better" out of several desktop amps, but are you suggesting to use the DX90 in conjunction with an separate amplifier to really push my cans, or are you implying that the HD800s do not pair well with the DX90?

Thank you.  Very helpful. I was planning on picking up the DX90 because of all the reviews I've read, and there's a great sale going on right now.

I think I'm going to hold off on shipping it out for a while seems like the cutting in out is common for most people

A simple question (hopefully) would the DX90 be able to comfortably drive a pair of Sennheiser HD700s without an external amp (150 ohms)?

Cheers.

I'm 45 and my hearing is pretty much shot to pieces but even for my jaded ears the difference between an iPod and the DX90 was staggering! Prior to the DX90. I use the DX50 use Westone W40s and constantly find myself grinning like a loon when I'm listening. Source material can make a huge difference as can your cans. I don't feel there's much room for subjectivity. It's a major leap up the SQ ladder from an iPod. Before the DX90 I was using a modded iPod with a 128gb CF card and flac files along Rockbox and it's like night and day!

I drive the HD600 (300 Ohms) and can easily achieve a listening volume at the threshold of discomfort. Sound quality is superb, albeit a notch below what I can achieve amp'd with my iDSD but still great.

Is there a way to limit the DX90 dB level? Hearing loss is unacceptable for me as a musician

to drive the hd700 from the dx90 set the output gain on high.  i found the sound quality quite good but the soundstage smaller than when driving the hd700 from my integrated amp at home.  on the home amp i got a 235o soundstage.  with the dx90 on high output gain i got a 135o soundstage using the same music source file in flac format.

volume is not the measure of the ability of an amp to drive some specified headphones.  for example, when i drove the hd700 from the dx90 on LOW output gain it was plenty loud, but the sound was muddy and there was no real soundstage.  don't let people tell you something is adequate based on loudness.  the amp must be powerful enough to give fine control of the headphone speakers.

No, just turn the volume down. With the SE846 for example, I keep it at around 140 on low gain but I listen quite softly.

Thanks. What's the difference between gain and volume control? Does it matter if the gain is low and volume high or if i do the contrary? How do i know what my gain should be?

just pulled the trigger on DX90, quick question on burn-in - Do I just plug in the cable in the headphone out and play any music?  Should I set the gain to a particular level?  Last, I have the altone200, anyone know the appropriate gain setting for them.

Use the gain and volume combo that you think sounds best with your phones, there is no "correct" combination

Yeah, that's what it sounds like to me, too.  But that makes me a little flustered, because I'm fairly new to all of this.  I, too, just pulled the trigger on a DX90 to give it a go, reading that it will power me HD800s.  Now, however, I'm also hearing that I should get another amp to go along with it the DX90, even if the DX90 gives it enough volume?

I'm confused.  Why would I need to do this?  What's more, how to I choose an amp that doesn't color the sound of the DX90, when after all, I purchased the DX90 to give a neutral/natural sounds. I bought my HD800s to hear the intricacies of every recording, for better or worse - the poor sound and the sublime - and now there's possibly one more link in the chain that I need to help drive my headphones better?

Yeah, so again, I'm a bit confused.  Maybe somebody can help end my confusion. :)

I don't know anything about the HD800 except that it sounded very good when I tried it.

When I listen to HE560's out of the DX90 it does the job. I can listen at full volume with low gain. When I use NFB11 the sound is improved. When I listen to Master 9 the sound is even better.

Instruments have more texture. Headphones "open up."

I don't know why this is. I hope I don't confuse you anymore. Intricacy and detail aren't the only things that improve with an improved amp. Separation, stage, textures, extension, everything improves.

After months of testing I came to the conclusion that DX90 sounds best stand alone. I only listen to it with IEM's.  I love DX90 for on the go. No comparison to other portable players I tried such as the iPod and Walkman.

I think you would be very pleased to hear the HD800's on a great amp.

Gain just makes it louder by a few decibels.
