I have a Cowon Z2 and DX50's SQ is many levels up than Z2. wink.gif

Judging by the D10, the D12, the DX100, the DX50 and the PB2, Ibasso is certainly a lot less colored, more powerful and their DAPs have dedicated analog and digital line outs. (Former J3 & X7 owner here)

Somewhere in between Cowon and dedicated at-home DACs.

But definitely, if you're used to Cowon (J3 owner, here) then you will notice a very substantial improvement in the transparency, detail and overall authority of sound from an iBasso.

It's not 'night-&-day', but it is worth the investment.

I have a J3, and the DX50 was noticeably better sounding. However, the J3 does have the benefit of a better touchscreen, which allows you to see a lot more on the screen. If I had a J3 with the sound quality of the DX50, I'd be set in terms of DAPs (or not, this is head-fi after all).

Closest thing to that is either Sony NW-ZX1 or Calyx-M

I suppose the iRiver AK DAPs also count, but I dislike their attitude towards their customers and towards business ethics in general.

With the AK100, I kept asking about the gapless. They would email me back that they were working on it and then it came out on the AK120 and required a hack to get it on the 100. They were lying all along that they really wanted to give it to the users of the 100. I had also emailed them about the output impedance of 22ohms and they said that less wasn't as good sounding. I told them that I had modified mine with no resistor on the output and that it did sound better but they insisted it couldn't be then came out with the AK100 II without it. They lied again when they emailed me that they would be doing nothing about it and that it sounded worse without the higher output impedance. I lost all respect for the company, realizing they have one thing on their minds, themselves and not the customer though they really like the customers money.

Then they can wait all they want for it, they are not going to get it, not a those insane prices.

The problem is though that they are selling lots of units. People who read HiFi magazines and swallow the syrup will be buying them up.

Not that HiFi mags aren't a decent source of information but your ******** filter needs to be set to high with some writers and mags.

Me, too. I don't think I will ever spend my money on their products.

The bright side is that more DAPs will be released. Calyx M ticks all the boxes for most of the customers and I really hope they succeed with their first DAP. I am sure I will try their future offerings when there is a need for me to upgrade DAP.

I cancelled my subscription to Stereophile when a $6000 tube pre-amp was praised as "Great value for money".

$6000 IS indeed a bargain:
