It seems to me that this is another indication to not upgrade until they got their act together. Their action is turning into a nightmare support mess.
I do not agree it is a nightmare as that for me, is taking it way too far. Both FW's work for me. From what I have gotten from iBasso is the first FW and the new dual CPU, required the batchtool at first and then they got any future FW to work by dropping it onto the internal memory and going the regular route of upgrade.
On sound, I don't know. It is subjective. Maybe I jumped the gun. Maybe too much coffee who knows. The point is, I willingly tried the new FW again and feel fine with it.
And apparently from everything I have read, new FW's interact with the Rockchip in that the sound changes some. I don't have a dap though, that changing the FW did not change the sound. Either that was intentional by the manufacture or not but most of the time there was no comment on the change in sound from the manufacture. At least iBasso looks into this.
I have the Chord Hugo, considered by many to be one of the best dacs on the market, bar none. Competing with dacs cost 5 to 7 thousand and many consider compared to these, it is better. And even with all those accolades, a few prefer the mids of the 901 or the highs of the Anv 3 from Hifisound. Many do not agree with the previous sentence but that is life. There are so many variables. And there are some who do not like the UI of the Hugo and some who are fine with it and some who do not like the input and output access and some who are fine with it. I don't see any of this as the price we pay for a niche market, I see it as being adaptable myself and realizing that every step I take is an adventure as it is with the companies that manufacture these daps and dacs and I don't think anyone feels ripped off but if they do, then let them sell or send back what they have, whatever the option might be.
