OK, you can all continue with the discussion, now....

Given much how much love you have been showing the AK folks lately, I'm sure you want the AK240 as well.  ;):D

I never pay after 'loving' anyone!

Back to the DX90... if iBasso have engineered the new amp to sound approximately as good as the one in the DX100, it could be one helluva bargain, and so nice that it's slim enough to reasonably use in a pocket.

I suspect single-ended mode, DX90 will be comparable or close to the new spaceship and if 90 carries the rich sound of ESS9018 chip. We should buy 4 more of these to give away to friends and family.:D

Joking aside, I agree - I really don't see how the DX90 can be far off the SQ of the AK, if iBasso do their job properly (and I believe they will).

Yes, it shouldn't be that far off.  If we can capture 95% of the DX100's sound and put it in a smaller package then we will have one hell of a player.

I was going to buy the AK240, but now I think I'll just spend the $2400 on a DX90 and then wrap it in 19 $100 bills.

Well, one is a purpose built DAP with a powerful amplifier, dual dac chips and a small low-res screen, the other is a smartphone without phone functionality and a 6" 2K screen. I'd say the latter is probably better for watching videos and I'm fairly confident that the former should win on sound quality.

I'm sure the xplay 3s will be a lot better than average consumer DAP's and phones, but it will be far from the level of DX90. specs is only one part of the equation, the implementation of the chips also makes a huge difference, and I doubt the xplay can pull anything spectacular in its extremely space restricted environment of a large screen high end slim smart phone. The power output will also suffer in the xplay due to the lack of space, there is also no room for capacitors or large voltage regulators etc. All that said, I will probably buy an xplay 3s if the UI is smooth and well thought out, as it is a killer phone, and I would use it to watch movies, so the great sound quality can also be used in that scenario also.

Hardly in direct competition with the DX90 though, is it?

no but good overall device to consider,,,,,sq should be best among tablets or smartphones at least

When I compare the DX90 with the Calyx M, DX90 has one more ESS9018K2M chip and selling at half the price. :D

Come to think of it... For the cost of the AK240, you could buy the DX90, The PB2 and the Noble K10 ciems. I'm pretty sure that rig would sound better than the AK240 with no amp and no headphones.
