Yes this has happened to me on 3 tracks (several times on each track) but replaying the same track it did not happen again. This since 2.0.5. Never happened on the original FW. The sound suddenly cuts out and then after a few seconds fades back in

Quick question before I pull the trigger on this.

Was reading that the DX50 sometimes had an issue where the volume would suddenly spike. Does it happen with this? Don't want to suddenly go deaf when pretending to work while at work

However I never experienced this issue with 16 Ohms IEMs, maybe because of higher impedance, maybe because those IEMs have L-shaped jack that makes less physical stress on DAP’s audio output.

It happens to me with the X3, the jack was rotating into the socket while i was walking.

Fixed by changing the 90° angled jack plug by a straight one.

Is Gapless turned on? If so, perhaps it is momentarily incorrectly sensing the end of the track.

I've had that happen to me since 2.0.0

I can safely say it has not but it is with my player, furthermore I updated my DX50 with DOC2008 hack which is equivalent to DX90 version 2.0.5 and that problem vanished too so it looks like they have fixed the problem with DX90 and most likely with DX50 when they'll release the next version (1.2.9).

IMO it's gone but I am putting the following disclaimer; don't sue me if you loose your hearing on those volume spikes for both players on my observations. End of warning. biggrin.gif

Yes gapless is always on. It didn't happen replaying the same track. And I only use the unit stationary and line out to an amp.

It seems there are conflicting reports in terms of bass level and the two FW versions. What is the general view on bass and 2.0.5 - is the level reduced, the same or increased?

This is my view and take this with a grain of salt or many more.

Bass quantity is reduced and highs increased, the results is more detailed on mid-highs but a loss of lower bass, it's not as punchy as it was before. Tbh I don't like it so back to the original release my ears had enough of dull/lacking bass and strident vocals for a day. I think it shifted the frequency band upward.

Edit: I did give it a chance but my ears said it's enough and my ears are the boss. tongue.gif

My thoughts, bass was reduced, airy and more wide soundstage, SQ for me became more balance and neutral. Due to the reduced bass I find the dynamics and musicality lacking(this was 1st impressions). But then the neutrality and more detailed SQ got me for me to like it. Maybe you should give it a shot and hear what you really want.. Again just my thoughts and still a personal preference..

Is this a pattern?

The DX50 went through quite a few firmware updates, and with each one the sound character changed, sometimes in a seemingly random fashion.

I am beginning to wonder if these SQ changes are intentional, or simply a by-product of tweaking other aspects of the FW.

Hi. As far as loud volume without distortion, how would the DX90 compare with spending the money instead on a good quality external amp and using that with my current SanDisk Sansa Clip? Which would be the better route for clear sound with max volumes? Thank you!

It will always depend on the phones you use or will use. But in general, you only want to use an external amp with DX90 if you are using hard to drive phones which does not go loud enough on DX90. Or you want to alter the sound signature other than what DX90 has. Not many portable amps can satisfy the 1st condition. The 2nd condition is heavily subjective and more of personal preference.

Thank you for answering. If I'm understanding you correctly, It's hard to find a more powerful amp than what's already included in the DX50, at such a portable size. If I would get a good portable amplifier and use it with a cheap player such as the Sansa Clip, would I get comparable power and clarity as the DX50 without a amplifier?

I don't hear any less bass or increased highs with the new FW , I don't know why people hear different things, they should all sound the same or at least similar. People are describing the new sound completely opposite to what I hear. To me 2.0.5 is more musical with great mids , bass and highs that are less sharp than they use to be.
Soundstage has move more upfront than side to side like it use to be. When we listen to concerts the sound comes from in front of us , not from the sides like most headphones systems sound . To me this is as real as it gets. Just my humble opinion of course.
