It's truly an irony; instructions coming from someone who does not even own the DX90, you sir are a very skillful thought oriented fella. beerchug.gif

When are you gonna buy your own? tongue.gif

The main reason I don't have one yet is because I'm currently unemployed - $419 is a steal but I don't want to steal to buy one

Sorry about, let's hope you can find a job soon. I am sure the likes of iBasso would love to take your money. wink_face.gif

I have not used the OTG function yet on the player but I thought NTFS was the wrong format for those connected drives, shouldn't it be fat32 and no more than 2TB or I just dreamed about that? blink.gif

Have you tried a fat32 formatted stick drive using the OTG cable?

I would go as far as saying stealing it. biggrin.gif

Don't you like those beautiful AKXXX II models, how about one or both? I am sure you can save say close to 3K. eek.gif

Yeah, what I love most about them is the way they thoughtfully removed one of the memory slots (I think they did this as a tribute to the DX90, which costs about ⅕ the price), and devalued all their existing recent models, as a favour to the people who shelled out thousands of bucks for the existing recent models. How nice of them.

...but... we digress.

It's kinda funny that the DX90 is not perfect but neither is the Calyx-M, and maybe it's closest competitor may turn out to be the Geekwave, which has come out of nowhere

For now, I think the DX90 will sell well, and I'd still like to buy one when I can.

Point taken.

Geek Wave is not a new project it's an old one that never took off and they decided to redesign the project from portable DAC to portable player.
I checked the klickstarter funding project link and gotta say that the hardware implementation really looked attractive up until the point where I thought; where is the UI? It looks like the UI is actually not on the dap. The dap itself is a two or three line display and there is absolutely no demo of it that exists. It sounds as if it needs to be operated through an iOS or Android phone connected to the Player Bluetooth link. The reason why it's so power lite is that no screen UI exists. So not too attractive plus it looks like an old fat Apple 4 iPhone, past its time. frown.gif

Please someone tell me where the UI is and I'd say I'll buy one lmao. Besides, it won't be available until next year so your money is tight up until then.

Bottom line the Calyx M still has a shot as long as battery runtime is not an issue for you.

Must be NTFS as it worked with a thumb drive (my external drive is 2 TB). Too bad, as I was looking forward to having my entire library to port around.  Looks like my work around will have to be multiple micro SD cards.

There is nothing perfect, in terms of price/functionality/performance, but the nearest thing, to me (and I'm not just saying this; I really mean it) is the DX90 (with the X5 putting in a good showing, but a bit too heavy for me)

The DX90 is:

  • Lightweight
  • relatively compact
  • extremely fairly-priced
  • has quick-swappable battery, so duration is no particular concern (which really pleases me!)
  • Sounds at least as good as anything else in it's price bracket, and possibly quite some way above it, too

The bugs (2 second truncation, and slight clicking noise) do need to be resolved ASAP, and it still annoys the hell out of me that iBasso didn't make the effort to include 2 card slots (probably in order to streamline co-development of the DX50/90 firmwares) but, on balance, it's still got no real competitors, in terms of the above factors, for someone like me who uses their DAP only in their jeans pocket.

As for the UI of the Geek Wave - yes, I did notice that, but I have quite a strong feeling that they're going to arrive at the conclusion that they need to do better, if they wish to compete with other DAPs. It's not due out until early 2015, so there's still time for them to come to their senses.    ...but if they don't, then you're right - it won't cut the mustard with the current UI.

...and who knows what other big names may join the fray by then - Naim or Cambridge Audio, or similar, perhaps?

Calyx-M has turned out to be a damp squib, thus far - perhaps it will rally and turn out well, but it's looking unlikely now. As you know, I was quite confident that it would sound as good as the AK240 (which didn't blow me away when I demo'd it at the Bristol Hi-fi Show), but the early user impressions from Korean customers of the Calyx-M have been rather disheartening, so I may have to hold my hands up and eat my words. We'll see. As for the 4hr battery duration - that's just ridiculous - absolutely no way I'd drop a thousand bucks on something that can't even play 4 albums(!!) without running out of steam. I'm also a bit suspicious about the deafening silence regarding USA/European distributors - is this because D&A secretly know there are major problems to be dealt with before they can release internationally, or is it because they can't meet the necessary production volume, or is there some other reason? I certainly don't believe that they've been unable to find willing distributors in USA / Europe, so the silence seems quite peculiar, to me.

Might be that your drive draws more power than the DX90 can deliver so you need external power for the drive with a splitter cable. I know sorensiim among others use it that way

Hello all,
I finally got my player to download the version 2.0 firmware. I am not sure I like it as much as I like the new version? What is the general consensus in regards to this? Do you like the new sound or the original?

Regards
Jeff
