Bassey headphone recommendation.

Hello, I received a pair of Bose QC15 as a present and I plugged them in yesterday to test out the quality - they sounded worse than my $40 Razer gaming headphones I bought years ago. The bass was rattling and it sounded like my music was coming through a tweeter with ear piercing highs which gave me a headache.

I am going to exchange them this week and try to find something comparable in price. I've been doing some googling but it looks like I need to get a specific recommendation.

I'm a bass guitar player so I listen to the bass in almost every song (wether that be a real instrument or digital synthesizer). My music taste does vary though - I listen to a lot of newer prog metal with those 7-8 string guitars and a lot of funk fusion stuff. Really like a prominent bass sound, don't know if I want my head to rattle (haven't tried crazy bass headphones). I love my low deep bass sounds and my mid aggressive bass. However I don't want to drone out the highs and mids in the funk stuff and some of the 'pretty high frequency vocals' in the metal stuff. Would like mids and high absolutely present and not distorted.

I need them to be closed ear to wear that won't be heard when my housemates are sleeping and tell me to turn off my subwoofer:p. That being said, I am a student and travel to and from school periodically and would like them to be semi portable but have no problem sacrificing the majority of the portability for quality.

My only problem is that I live in Canada. Ideally would like to go out and try them beforehand if possible. Also I would much rather go pick them up in person if someone knows a store that sells them. I'm not against buying online but would prefer to avoid it.

I'm not sure what the qc15s were worth but I'm estimating about $300. I do not want to spend any more than what they are worth.

Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it

Edit : would also like to know if I could hook these up to my bass amp and use them to practice with. Not a feature that is necessary but would like to know if it's possible before I try and blow something.
