So I'm looking to buy my first pair of quality over-the-ear headphones and wanted some recommendations. I would be using this on the go with my ipod, so portability is important. I would prefer a set of cans that doesn't necessarily need to be supplemented with an amp or equalizer. I listen to a wide variety of music from classical to folk rock to rap. I'm no audiophile, but I do appreciate quality in the representation of my music. Before I really knew what I was doing, I was looking at Beats just because that was what I knew, but when I listened to them in person they were terrible with anything that wasn't bass heavy. Now I do enjoy quite a bit of bass, but I think I would prefer something that is a lot more well rounded so that I could still hear the mids and highs along with a well represented bass. I love when I can discover all the nuances in a track that you miss with poor quality phones. Another thing that is fairly important to me is for them to be relatively closed so that I don't disturb others around me if possible. Active noise cancelling isn't ultra important (often I've found those noises detract from the music) as long as there is reasonably good noise isolation. Budget is around 300 or less.
