Need some help putting together an immersive system.

I'm planning on purchasing the Oculus Rift once the consumer version comes out. I realize that having immersive sound will greatly amplify my experience. Unfortunately I know little to nothing about audio. I did some looking around and found the AKG K702 Headphones to be good for good quality audio. Unfortunately I have no idea as to what else I need to make use of these headphones. I also don't know if those headphones are any good for gaming haha. Do you guy have any recommendations? or perhaps some pointers?

What you need is a good quality DAC and a good quality Headphone Amp. You can get this things on a good sound card, like Asus Xonar STX or you can get a good USB DAC/AMP like Fiio E10/E07K/E17 or you can get separated Amp and Dac, like Schiit Modi and Schiit Magni.

Best Luck!

Sorry for the late reply I forgot that I had turned off the email notifications. I looked around the forums and ended up ordering the q 701, Vali, and Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD. Since I'm new to most of this technology i'm still not 100% sure if I made the right decisions with those items but once they get here I'll give them a try. Thanks for the suggestions!

You make the right choices.

The Titanium-HD will provide audio quality as good as you can get in a sound card.

The external headphone amplifier Vali, should be equal or better to any headphone amplifier built in a sound card.

Just remember to disable the motherboard's on-board audio, in the BIOS.
