Need some recommendations for my first high-end setup

I've been a longtime lurker but decided to sign up to get a second opinion before I pull the trigger on a high-end setup. As of right now I'm set on getting a pair of HD800s but am not as certain when it comes to which amp/DAC I should get to compliment them. I have a pretty broad price range but I want to stay away from diminishing returns as much as possible. It's probably worth mentioning that I prefer solid state amps over tubes as well. I've been looking into a Mjolnir/Gungnir stack but haven't heard much about it in regards to the HD800. If anyone has any personal experience with either of them I'd love to hear your thoughts on it and am open to other suggestions for amps/DACs as well.

For a good value, Audio-GD NFB-15.32 ($300) or NFB-11.32 ($380), both are external DAC amps.

I had looked at the NFB 11.32 in the past but ultimately decided against it for aesthetic reasons being as it is going to be in my living room. I've heard nothing but good things about it though so I'll definitely keep it in mind if I don't find something else.

hey dood, congrats on your purchase! if you are asking about specific pairing with your HD800, you will find that there are tons of really long threads on that exact subject! if you search "hd800 amp" OR "hd800 dac," you will find a lot of threads w/ hd800 owners sharing impressions.

I would first figure out what kind of budget you have for a dac/amp, and then go from there. good luck!

You could always build some kind of custom box around it, to make it blend into your living room.

HD800 is picky about amps. If I wanted it, I would buy HDVD800 too and not mess around. If you're concerned about diminishing returns, you'll have exceeded them by buying HD800. Enjoy!

Lagosaurus, I am in a similar predicament as you and I started a thread to ask for help as well. I listed a few amps that I am considering, that you may want to look into as well. Hopefully we will both get some helpful suggestions...

Here is a ling to my thread. http://www.head-fi.org/t/697507/search-for-an-amp-to-pair-with-hd800-please-help
