AKG Q701 Amp/Dac from scratch

Thread Starter

So before posting this I figured I'd search the forums and try and find an answer but all I found were posts with people who already had previous equipment or threads that derailed into headphone comfort and such so I'll lay out my situation and budget and hopefully get some solid suggestions.

This coming January I'll be getting my hands on some AKG Q701's moving up from AD700's. These headphones will primarily be used for gaming with some music/movies on the side (90% gaming 5% music 5% movies for reference).

Now up until now I've never used anything other than onboard motherboard audio, no sound cards no external amps or dacs, nada.

Budget is about 280-300 max for an amp/dac combo, I have heard that my motherboards onboard DAC should be fine unless I hear interference in which case an external DAC would be needed.

Help me Head-Fi, I'm absolutely lost with all this audio stuff.

Just to make sense out of this, why does the Audio-GD need an asus sound card? Doesn't the external DAC/Amp take the place of a sound card?

Using the Xonar DG is optional, the Audio-GD can be plugged directly into the motherboard.

O2+ODAC or O2+Asus soundcard. DIY or http://www.jdslabs.com/ The latter is portable (used loosely).
