Charlotte, NC Meet: April 19th 2014 - Page 20

So I got good news and bad news. Good news is that I decided to get the AKG K812. Bad news is that I have to sell the HE-500 and ESP950 in its stead to fund it.

Here's my updated gear list:

Headphones:
HD800
K812
KEF M500

Amps:
Questyle CMA800R
Bottlehead Crack w/ Speedball
Bottlehead Quickie w/ PJCCS
Schiit Vali
Emotiva MiniX*

DACs:
Emotiva DC-1
Audioengine D3
Schiit Modi

*Even though I'm planning to sell HE-500 before the meet, I'll probably hold onto the MiniX and bring it to the meet since someone else is bringing the HE-500 and this pairing is pretty nice.

Good stuff.  Compared the K812, the HE-500 is a dime a dozen as far as how many people own them right now.  I know at least one other on the list that should be bringing one.

By the looks of the date of the meet, i may be able to also bring the schiit vali and modi. it is 50/50 right now and i don't know if i will pull the plug just yet. The reason being is that I don't have a pair of headphones that will change much in terms of sound quality if paired with the vali/modi combo. I only have the westone 3 IEM and vmoda m100 over ear headphones and both are driven fairly well out of my ipod touch 5g.

Nimbo I don't have any dynamic cans right now so all I use my o2 amp for is the sony xba4 iems and they scale more than I would have thought, you might be pleasantly surprised.

I should have a pair of Mad Dog Pro's to bring with me.

alright i will definitely consider it then!

if i were to get the vali/modi combo, what headphones do you think would work well with them. I would probably like to invest no more than $300, so i was looking at the Hifiman HE-400. Ive listened to them before with the modi/magni combo and i thought they were fantastic! Now they are $300 dollars so it is also in a semi-longterm investment range

I think hd600, dt880, k7xx are also in that price range, I would wait till after the meet so you can check out a number of cans before I spent the 300 bucks

That is what i was thinking. I may not even buy the amp and dac till then because i saw they will be at the meet so i will be able to listen to them through the headphones that will be there. So basically i can listen to the setup before i can purchase it for myself! haha

I also recommend waiting.  And of course, by your description, the K712 like I'm using would also be an excellent choice.  And I'm not just saying that because I may want to sell mine there, haha.  Of course it depends if I'm able to buy something else before the meet, or sell then buy at the meet from a vendor.  This is another reason I'm hoping I can get Hifiman to send a rep with their new headphones.   Of course then you may just be tempted up to the HE-400i.

Biggest similar shock was when I went to pick up my Super 7.  I forgot to bring my own headphones to test and he already sold his HD-800 and all he had were these $7 monoprice earbuds and they sounded pretty dang good out of it for $7 IEMs.

JWahl I found a sony walkman cd player that is absolutely fantastic!! I will be super happy to bring it! The model is CD Walkman D-EJ011. I found it while cleaning and have been surprised how good this thing works ever since!

There is something a little strident in the upper mids but I think the Soloist is just laid back in that area. I think some tube rolling will help that though. Vocals are simply phenomenal. Looking forward to comparing with Danny's Moth amp and seeing how much family genes are shared.

I'm really excited in hearing my Fostex on your Eddie Current Super 7......I have dreamed about buying a Zana Deux for the past 2 years. I really want to hear the difference between the EC and my Peachtree (determining that point of diminishing returns).

Afghan vet are you still using that wavelab converter?

Yes sir, I am using the wavelength audio usb-spidf converter. Not sure how effective it is in my system due to the specs of the DAC in the Peachtree......have yet to do the proper research in this area.
