I've settled on headphones. Do I now get a sound card or an external DAC?

I was recommended a sound card in addition to the headphones I've picked out (HD 558s) but other forum posts have essentially said that a sound card does more than a lot of people need; if you just want to listen to music, get an external DAC instead. There was also mention of motherboard noise in some posts.

I'm looking for the best value between $50-100. Which route would be better?

Thanks for your time.

I've had the FiiO E10 and it was a decent piece of equipment. I doubt you can find better in your price range.
